Schools should not lose coaches to conference mates. The schools that don't commit to football are easy targets. UTEP should take heed.

Nevada has in common with UTEP that they spend more on mbb coaches than they do football coaches. They lack some of the facilities for football that Colorado St has, such as an indoor practice facility. Apparantly Nevada admin has only paid lip service to these things over the years.

The article also mentions that the fb fanbase have to be begged to show up for games not involving UNLV. That sounds familiar.

So are you saying LA Tech going to hire Dimel??

UTEP did poach Fresno State for Terry. Idk not in the same conference but I consider them equals.

This goes to show that no matter how much success you have or how much you're willing to pay the hc, without the facilities you will lose your coach. We all will to a P5 team but to lose it to another G5 team in your own conference signifies the importance of the facilities arms race.

Still 14 bowls since 2005 and had a 13-1 season in 2010. They still win. What’s UTEP’s excuse?

The main point the writer is making is that if you want to be successful in college football, excel in your conference and maintain that success then you better have the necessary infrastructure and financial support from your school.

To your point on wins and losses, the reference he makes is that for G5 schools, hiring football coaches is a crap shoot full of risk. The Nevada coach turned out to be a home run but he came to them from being a wr coach. Totally under the radar. You expect to lose a successful head coach to a P5 but not to a conference rival. He makes $625k at Nevada and will almost triple that at Colorado St.

I'm not worried we will lose Dimel but I am concerned that when he leaves will we attract good candidates for head coach and will that new coach be able to attract good assistants with the pay and facilities UTEP offers.

It looks like Nevada was very fortunate to have a good loyal HC in Ault. Having an alumni lead your program and then stay after the foundation is built is a huge advantage. When he retired he said he was tired of doing so much with so little. The writing has been on the wall for a decade.

Fortunately for Nevada they hit on their next two coaches. Even the one they fired did a decent job.

Now the doing more with less mentality has caught up to them. Hopefully they hit another home run in their next hire or things can go downhill very quickly for them.

What we need at UTEP is the attitude that CSU has when it comes to athletics. Wasn't too long ago that their AD said that the current G5 athletic model isn't sustainable. It was full speed ahead to get into a P5 conference. Hasn't worked ouf yet but they've built the facilities and are spending on coaches to try to get there. In a Dave Campbell Texas Football article I referenced here about a month ago, Senter said when we start winning and drawing good crowds again, we should be knocking on the Big 12's door and I agree. What he is doing to get us there I don't know but that should be our goal and the aim of our athletic strategic plan.

Nevada a flagship for the state he said five years ago? Nah. That was a shot across the UNLV bow because UNLV has state politicos in state office.

CSU has a lot of cash and way better fan support and he will be a star up there with just a modicum of success.

Chris Petersen was a once in a lifetime coach
Dan Hawkins left him a fully stocked bad ass, granite tops and high quality stainless steel kitchen. I think Hawkins took his son to Colorado, not sure? I clearly remember Hawkins taking Colorado job was probably not a good move to many insiders because he had BSU knocking on the door. Petersen got the credit and built on Hawkins players. It’s like Chucky getting the Super Bowl off of Tony Dungy’s Bucs team. Only wrinkle Chucky added was the now infamous Tampa 2 defense used by all.

Disagree. Boise was at their best in 09,10, and 11. Hawkins(go play inter murals brother!!) was long gone by then. Had their been a playoff in those days they’d not only have been in it but maybe won. Their teams were loaded with NFL talent and played nearly mistake-free football. They routinely went into Power Five schools stadiums and beat them. As a UTEP fan, it was a joy to see that it could be done.

Ok. But the history is there. What BSU AD left was a legacy.
