Next UTEP coach is...

There has to be surprise candidate. If Golding or Tang interviewed and not given the job. Maybe there is a bigger name?? Sean Miller or Josh Pastner is my guess.
 
Is there any truth to foster having a say? That would be better news honestly than any coach if he’s willing to back that up with some more dollar bills

From what I just heard we might be getting Jerome tang and Tristan Clarke coming with him

just the rumor from some well connected Baylor people ... just a rumor but now they are mentioning Clarke who sat out for us last year and retired this year but is trying to come back
 
I was an early advocate of Golding but I’m even more so now with the Tang news dropping. I’ve been hopeful for Golding for many reasons, none more than what I’ve read opposing coaches say about him. You very rarely see intra-conference coaches be so forthcoming about the skill level of a coach they are recruiting against. They talk about him like a genius.

I think we can all agree that the necessity to win has never been greater. Admittedly, I know very little about Tang; however, I do know he has exactly zero wins as a head coach. That would be one hell of a risk to take at this point and time. Being an assistant coach on a National Championship team does not equate to wins as a head coach. With Golding (or Jans, DeVries) you assure yourself of a VERY good opportunity to win 20+ games a year. I don’t see this as the time we need to be gambling. We don’t need a splash hire. We need a proven head coach who has had sustained success in the past 5+ years. I’m hopeful, however, whoever is hired has success.
 
Tang was instrumental in leading the bear defensive attack and was a good recruiter who knows the game very well.... he would be a great hire.... I have followed and been a season ticket holder at Baylor for the last 5 years.... I think he is ready to take over

I just saw Baylor take one of the best college offenses I've ever seen and befuddle them all game with their defense. They also dominated the boards, especially their offensive glass. I don't know how many times over the past several seasons that I've seen us on the wrong side of the rebounding battle. Tang was instrumental in building that Baylor team. I would love to see see him coaching the Miners.

Also, let's not forget that the two best coaches we've had in the post Haskins era were assistant coaches when we hired them: Gillispie and Barbee. Our last two coaches had head coaching experience, and didn't produce. Now, granted, Rabadeaux was also an assistant when he was hired, and flamed out spectacularly, but he has been the exception. So sure, hiring an assistant is never a sure thing, but hiring a successful head coach doesn't always work out, either.

Personally I'd be happy with Tang, Golding, or DeVries, and okay with Jans or Barbee. But I'm certainly not going to dismiss a coaching candidate like Tang just because he hasn't been a head coach, not when he's helped to create a team as great as that Baylor team I watched a few nights ago.

Terrific. There are three available options who have done the same (Golding, Jans, DeVries) who have all been head coaches into March. Now is not the time to attempt to make the sexy hire and prove to everyone you found the assistant coach who can transition into a winning head coach. Don’t kid yourself, had Tang been a hot commodity, he would’ve been out years prior. It’s not like Tang says “ Oh, hell yes, UTEP is open and I should take that one.”

It’s not just basketball where this is a huge risk. Too many times, offensive coordinators are hired based on a championship season. The speed of everything around them changes. When you’re sitting at the biggest desk, your plate gets full very quickly. Have to be terrific at time management, oversight, communication, etc. You don’t feel that pressure until you become a head coach and I don’t feel now is the time for us to let someone learn on the job. That’s a huge risk.

Certainly, you make very valid points! However, you mention “he hasn't been a head coach.” You mention Billy. Well, you should be elated that the talent pool of candidates willing to enter in an offer to coach for us has changed. We have coaches who seem interested (guess we don’t know all the truth) who are proven winners. I, personally, don’t think you hire a guy who’ve you’ve never seen manage a game/season and say “I’ll take this risk” over the proven candidates. To me, doing that would be saying that you know Tang will be successful and that’s just not the case.

While I agree with your number 1 guy NorthTexasRed, I’ve wondered what your affiliation with UTEP is. Noticed you started coming around when Terry was rumored to be leaving. You’ve been ALL Golding. No 2nd option...at least that I remember. I’m just curious.

I’m pretty certain (like 100% certain) the twenty of us commenting on here won’t have much say on who gets the job! Think more than anything, I just enjoy the banter. At the end of the day, I’m going to root for whoever is hired to win a lot of games. I do feel strongly about about Golding and Jans though.

NTR, I agree with everything you stated. UTEP basketball is at a critical juncture and we need an experienced coach who knows how to win. Golding is a proven winner and has taken his teams to the NCAA tourney and won against great odds. Keep in mind, he’s won as a Division I coach at a small school, which is hard to accomplish. The man is a basketball genius and has buy in from his players and coaches. He’s the real deal! He is a proven leader and will be successful anywhere he goes. While I don’t know much about Tang, he will have a learning curb as a head coach. There’s a big difference between being an assistant and the head man. There are individuals who make excellent assistants and recruiters, as we saw with Rodney Terry. He was not able to put it together. Unlike UTEP football, our basketball program is a desirable job, as we’ve seen from the interest of well respected coaches. Let’s not mess this up and sign Golding to a contract!
