Next UTEP coach is...

I do believe you owe me an apology for calling me out on my information. Or I'll take your silence as you already know that you lost this one. Even if Tang is ultimately hired, my info on interviews taking place here in Dallas were spot on.

Cube Jack said Senter was at UTEP last night because he saw him. Maybe all the interviews are on Zoom? Either way, if Sentet was at the Spring game, it wasn't a well ran event. Since he was at the Spring game, we know he isn't that focused on hiring a basketball coach

I'm no fan of Senter but he had to be at the Spring Game. Football is the most important sport. He needed to be there show off the renovation. Football is paramount for most of the donors. It was reported interviews were in dallas. We have boosters in Dallas who let the athletic department use their private jets. I'm sure he took a private plane to Dallas this morning. He had no choice but to be at the Spring game last night. The only way to increase donations for basketball is to win a football. A winning football team is the open faucet that fills the tub.

What do you all like about tang so much? 18 years at Baylor, 18?! Prior to that he was a coach at a Pre K - 12 school, waaaay better candidates out there.
That’s narrow minded... just because he’s been an assistant doesn’t mean he’s not ready and if you follow Baylor like I do, you would understand the type of culture they have built out there and how tang has been a huge part of that

Is there a proven coach that has head coaching experience, has consistently won tourny games at this level or higher, can bring in top recruits for our conference and is not on the verge of NCAA sanctions? No, so we are going to have to take a flyer on somebody and hope that they can prove us wrong at whatever their perceived deficiencies are.

Whether no HC experience or unproven recruiting or never having won any 'big' games I think we have some good candidates. I really really really hope that Senter gets the right person this time. I just want to enjoy UTEP basketball again!

Kind of true. If you are negotiating with your top choice and can’t come to terms, you’re then settling for 2nd best.
Except that we don’t really know what 1st and 2nd best is. “If” Tang is first as has been suggested, and we end up with Golding as 2nd option, I’m good with that. In fact, personally I’d rather land 2nd if that’s the order their seen in. In other words, option 1 or 2 are probably gonna be good.

It’s when we start dipping into the 4th option and beyond that we may level down.

Paul Mills was an assistant at Baylor for 14 years before he became a HC at Oral Roberts in 2017. He took Oral Roberts to the Sweet 16 this year. Grant McCasland was also an assistant at Baylor, and he won an NCAA Tourney game this year. Scott Drew produces some pretty good future head coaches that are winning NCAA Tourney games.

Big names like Watters, Hunt and Foster were there along with others such as Daw and of course Dr. Wilson.

Can't miss an event filled with people whose names are on some of the buildings

Supposedly Doc and Barbee already interviewed. Menzies is out.

For sure Tang, Golding, and maybe Jans. I wonder who the other two are.

Doc and Barbee are not worth $725k or whatever Terry was making. Tang is worth it but not Barbs and Doc for sure isnt.

RE: UTEP mbb coach a candidate for asst job at Texas

I am a Rice alum, and I spent a few years of my life in El Paso way back when. UTEP was consistently ranked in basketball during those years, and weekday nights at the SEC (that's what it was called back then) were often electric courtesy of the Miners. Duels with the hated BYU Cougars and New Mexico Lobos (both of whom were also ranked on occasion) whipped UTEP crowds into a frenzy, and those games often turned into tense and rancorous battles for pole position in the WAC.

Also, John Thompson honored Don Haskins in the 1980s by giving UTEP a home-and-home series when Georgetown was THE major power in college basketball. Thompson did that for few of his colleagues, but he respected Haskins and the history of the UTEP program just that much. The first game of that agreement occurred in El Paso when Georgetown was ranked fifth, and UTEP ran Georgetown out of the gym in front of a full house.

El Paso used to be such a great college basketball town, and this is why I desperately hope that UTEP finally finds a coach that can sustain some success there. Unfortunately, I agree with what Tim Floyd said on his way out: UTEP needs to be in a conference in the western U.S. Until this happens, I think UTEP will continue to struggle in most sports, even the ones the school has the potential to do well in. Here's to hoping that UTEP's next hire in basketball proves me wrong.

Yo! I think it was Tuesday’s show, but Kappy said something was going on within the “inside” that made Barbee standoffish. Whatever cryptic message that means.
I don't know exactly what happened but maybe it's because BS let Barbee go into his final contract year without an extension. That shows a complete lack of confidence in your coach. To make things worse he didn't even attempt to keep him here instead opting to make Floyd the highest paid coach in the history of UTEP athletics.

That gave me chills. Brought back great vivid memories. Oh what I would give to experience just a fraction of that success again.

I feel fortunate to have experienced Miner ball during the time frame to which the poster was referring. But it’s made it that much harder to have endured most of the last 20+ years, and especially the last 10.
