It's been 15 years, but NCAA tournament action has returned to Birmingham, Ala.

The more than 17,000-seat Legacy Arena, built in 1976, last hosted March Madness in 2008. That's because Legacy Arena couldn't compete with the newer venues around the country, Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center Authority executive director Tad Snider told WVTM-TV.
So, 10 years later, BJCC officials announced plans to spend more than $100 million to renovate what is now the Legacy Arena.

The upgrades included luxury boxes, floor-to-ceiling windows and improved lighting and seats.

"Our design team consulted with the NCAA ... to be able to compete on a national scale," BJCC board member Jimmie Stephens told WVTM-TV.

The arena work was funded in conjunction with the construction of the nearby Protective Stadium. The cost to build both facilities topped $600 million.
Birmingham and Jefferson County pitched in a combined $120 million.

UAB, private investors, the BJCC and a variety of tax streams funded the rest.

In the middle of those upgrades, it was announced that the NCAA would play six early-round games this week in Birmingham.

Pfffftttt.... Who cares? Happened before I was born so it doesn't matter. The worst thing that ever happened to UTEP. We should probably just return the trophy to the NCAA. It's been holding us back for decades. Do think Wyoming gives a crap about their title?
The NCAA Championship title is not holding us back. What’s holding us back is poor leadership at the AD level and mediocre coaches and players.

That’s like saying if one of your kids had a great accomplishment in high school but nothing since you wouldn’t be proud of them.

So he thinks at 14-19 he should be in a post season tourney, or is this a race thing?

After just ONE FREAKIN’ SEASON? Sure, you managed a memorable upset victory in the NCAA Tournament. Will you be able to duplicate that success again?

Then again, UTEP did the same thing after Bronzeing’s win over Texas.

Golding took ACU to the NCAAs twice and he brought that program up from D2. Even if he's crapping the bed at UTEP, what he did at ACU was atleast worth a look. His biggest issue is he can't recruit, which is something he probably wasn't going to develop at ACU. Unfortunately, he has to develop that skill at UTEP.

FDU shouldn't have even made the tournament... only got in based on a technicality (the conference tournament winner was not eligible). Still, the coach struck while the iron was hot. Good for him.
