Pac12 not dead?

Senter does not influence any decision on UTEP’s behalf. A number of things are considered, but who the AD is, is not of them. I don’t believe Senter has any bad blood with current MWC schools because of scheduling or poaching coaches.

UTEP will move conferences because they are wanted. The why doesn’t matter. Senter could cold call everyone, it’s not going to make a difference. He’s not selling insurance or fishing for donations.

It’s also foolish to believe Senter/Wilson haven’t been in contact with anyone from the MWC either or they’re not trying or haven’t ever “tried”.

Senter has little popularity because of Dimel and Terry, and to some extent Golding. Do you think he likes flying his teams to Miami and Delaware, when he could be flying them to Albuquerque or Phoenix?

That right there is the million dollar question. Are we wanted, or do we think that we’re wanted?

If the MWC continues as a conference, we are wanted. If the MWC doesn’t continue then we remain unwanted.

If Walden runs the table the rest of the way and Golding makes the NCAAs, we will still be unwanted, unless the MWC needs us to continue on.

But isn’t part of senters job to make Utep look attractive to the outside world and help make Utep relevant ? I would say he’s not doing the best

Sure, but all the things that make other schools relevant, they don’t have the El Paso anchor dragging them down.

El Paso has certain stereotypes, some of which that are definitely true. Some aren’t, but El Paso doesn’t have favorable things good for it.

Other conferences don’t need a bilingual call center or Mexican food. They want recruits and English speaking tv sets. All the Eastern leagues don’t need to go out this far, they have plenty of schools to choose from in the central and eastern time zones. UTEP is a non-starter.

The MWC only needs UTEP because of its location and lack of other qualified schools. There’s only so much Senter can do. Having a competent football program and a NIT caliber basketball program, wouldn’t change anything right now.

The AAC or SBC wouldn’t have taken UTEP 2 years ago. The SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, would never take them. UTEP doesn’t have a lot of options going forward.

Does anyone really think UNLV is going to say no to 2PAC? They already saw first hand what happens. They simply go down to the next name on the list. I wonder what the hold up is.

At one point the AAC had interest in UTEP back in 2020 or so. But we were the worst program in the country.

No. They would be dumb and stupid to do so. Unless they would be on the brink of being poor for decades, they gotta do it.

You really believe that 😅
I know it firsthand. I said interest, I didn’t say a lock or salivating at the idea. Look up interest.

They were also interested in other schools and ultimately preferred, and selected those schools.

I think interest might have been a bit of an overstatement. They were probably looking at every school available, looked at UTEP, laughed and said “Ok…. So who’s the next school.”

Yes, that’s a possibility. And I was told by someone with knowledge on the situation—Not firsthand.

Maybe I was lied to, or there was interest similar to Dumb and Dumber.

He doesn’t have the DECISION but he does influence the Decision
In the same way you influence your boss’s decision. I loathe defending Senter, but this one is pretty much above his head after he gives his two cents. What is interesting about that is Wilson is the former Secretary of the Air Force. AFA already committed back to the MWC but who knows how long that lasts at this rate.

Yes, that has to carry some weight. I would think they would vouch for UTEP, or at the very least be OK with UTEP being added. Problem is they don’t even know where they are going to end up at the moment.

I think when dust settles UTEP ends up in the MWC. The PAC12 is a pipe dream.

Right. If the MWC continues on as a conference, UTEP will be offered and I believe they would accept. Though, they could turn them down.

If the MWC dissolves, which they probably won’t, then UTEP stays in CUSA and maybe takes some MWC orphans.

Those are the only two scenarios I see. There is no scenario where the Pac 12 takes UTEP over New Mexico. So UTEP being invited to the Pac 12 isn’t happening now, probably ever.

Seems to me that there is alot of ego's involved and alot of "we have to survive" going on.

The PAC12 is promising a better deals than the MW when its basically the same conference. Now that the lawsuits are involved, its becoming personal. The MW is trying everything to not die.

The only value UTEP brings over UNM is the exit fees.

As of today, the Mountain West is not a Conference at 7 teams but neither is the PAC12.
As usual my friend, you are spot-on

I’m thinking Animal House when they brought up Flounder.

Coach Traylor and Lisa Campos are quoted in the SAEN that they’ve had discussions about a possible move west to the PAC. Of course Jimmy can move the needle! Y’all forget when he sure as hell was a Chatty Cathy and speaking out in 2021 when CUSA looked like it was about to flatline.

You can’t tell me Mario Moccia isn’t out-hustling Tio Jim on this right now, in the past few days, and in the days to come - in whatever capacity.

I simply just want Rip Van Senter to wake up and stop coasting. FFS I don’t care that the equipment team is cleaning visitor locker rooms!

We need an emergency UTEP EPMADAF fan council meeting immediately!

He doesn’t have the DECISION but he does influence the Decision
He can help the decision by making improvements in the Athletics especially the money making sports. Like I said by raising money, but right now President Wilson is the one that would be on the phone about what’s going on. She will tell him what she wants him to do and he’ll do it, Period! We need to be saying “We hope Wilson is really making a pitch for Utep to move into a better conference situation”

Here is an article with 4 former AD’s discussing realignment stories from the Athletic.

This qualifies as the most ignorant post of the year. Also the most a--hole troll.

Imo you're the real troll here. You never contribute anything meaningful to the discussion. Instead of offering thoughtful reasons for why you disagree, all you seem to do is resort to name-calling and putting others down. If you have a point to make, try expressing it with respect instead of belittling people.

Jcorona, notice who "liked" your response...if you haven't recognized the real trolls by now, maybe you don't understand what constitutes "trolling".

My understanding is that UNLV was under the impression the PAC 12 would pay for its exit fees, on top of the poaching penalties. The PAC 12 said UNLV needs to pay for its own exit fees.

Even if that’s 100% true, UNLV needs to join them. Even if it would be better for UTEP if UNLV remains in the MWC.

We’ll take that deal. Long term it will pay itself. Plus CUSA fees no where near MWC.

I personally think UNLV will join and make number 8 (9 basketball schools with Gonzag) and then the Pac12 can at least stabilize and work on TV Deals. After that then they can provide tangible numbers to sale their league. I would expect to see a Hawaii added for Football only and then if the AAC schools don’t want to move they would look to either Texas St, Nevada or even UNM and get to 10 in football. This I believe would 100% cause the MWC to reach out to Utep. However in this scenario I don’t know that what would be left remaining in the mountain west is stronger than CUSA, but of course the travel would be easier.

If AF and UNM are still in the MWC after all of this, then you jump. If they are gone then you sit and look and finances. All in all I still believe the MWC would be a better deal for UTEP.

The problem with UNLV is they’re already in debt, and on top of that they would have to pay large exit fees. I don’t blame them for remaining in the MW.

With Wilson’s strong connections with the Air Force she may be wanting UTEP to go to the MWC. I hope Wilson and Senter are talking to MWC or other conference officials.
