UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Who do you think was the best Golding recruit this season? Sibley?
Definitely Sibley. Not sure in which thread I mentioned this, but I think Kennedy and then Sibley are the next star players. For some reason I think Kalu will get way better as well. It may just be mental/confidence for him.

I didn't realize Evans was such a big dude. If his shooting and defense are there, then he is going to be a problem.

Where did I say that? I was just answering your question. Sibley did good , but the best recruiting Golding did was keeping most the core players. He only lost BW.
Ah hell, now I'm agreeing with Fili. This has me worried. But he's right in this case. A brand new coach coming in, no penalty for transferring, and yet Golding kept most of his core. That was truly impressive. Now BW did leave, but making 1st Team All Big 12, and making the Sweet 16, shows that he clearly made the right decision for himself.

I'm not 100% sure on this Maniac, but I don't think an athlete that has already transferred from another 4 year school is eligible to use the one time transfer exception. So, I'm not sure Boum, Kennedy, and Bieniemy would have been able to transfer and play at a D1 school last year. I think TV had graduated, so he could have used the graduate waiver last year, just like BW. If correct, this would also be the case for Agnew this year, since he has not graduated. Unless he graduates, he would need to drop to D2 in order to play next year, if he decides to transfer. There may be other waivers, but I think that is how the one time exception works. The extra Covid year added some complexity to this, but usually guys get 5 years to play 4 at the D1 level.

He was able to make them stay in EP but do you think he would have originally been able to bring them to El Paso?

You're correct. All Covid did was add an extra year of eligibility. If those guys wanted to transfer and hadn't graduated they would still have to sit out a year to play at a d1 school.

I can't imagine sitting out another year was too appealing to the guys who had already transferred from another D1 school. The smart play for them was to stay, and graduate, then explore their options again this year. My point is that maybe it wasn't that hard to convince them to stay. This year is a different story, of course, for Golding.

Thanks for clearing that up Train, great points. I should have known not to agree with Fili!🤣

I dont think it matters if a player transferred before the rule. The one time transfer still applies.

Yep, I am definitely not an expert in NCAA compliance, so I may be off on this. I did see the following:

"The athlete must not have previously transferred from another four-year school"

Not sure if this would apply to guys who transferred before the rule was implemented.

I think the confusion is cuz the new one time transfer rule took place around the same time as covid.

From the Terry recruits, Agnew and Bienemy received waivers and were eligible immediately. All the other transfers had to sit out a year.

Sibley used his one time transfer to play immediately this season.

It is definitely confusing. I presume guys like Agnew and Sibley would need to sit out the year if they decided to transfer this year, since they used their one time transfer exception.

I would like to know which players graduated. We know Boum did. What about Agnew, Bienemy and TV? All are classified as juniors but in reality are seniors and have played 4 years. If they graduated they're free to transfer.

Also what about Kennedy, did he already use his one time transfer?

I heard Bieniemy is expected to graduate in May. I haven't heard anything on Agnew, but if he does graduate, he would be able to use the graduate waiver. Kennedy sat out a year (prior to the one time transfer waiver), but can use the graduate waiver to play next year. TV also graduated.

Golding still did a good job by keeping the core. When hired didnt Golding say if a player wants to leave he will let them?

Smart to go after players who has played in CUSA. I think a lot of players that come from power 5 schools. think they will just dominate here but they dont.

I'm not a fan of this style. I think it's kind of lazy.
I’m not for offering just to offer, but hopefully he or the staff have some connection with these guys or at least a valid reason for why they should consider coming for a visit.

Well, if you go after a certain player very hard, offer, and they go elsewhere, then you are stuck with leftovers instead of a backup plan. I think it's fair to say if you go after 5 guys very hard, and you can lock in 2, that is a success.

Right, but what’s your pitch? Going after them “hard” doesn’t mean shit.

The whole point is to play a year with his brother and maybe in front of family? Plus this staff has nothing to do with the previous school. What a weird comment from a sports reporter. Must be personal.

let the twitter war begin. 💣💣🔫🔫
