UTEP Basketball Recruiting

"UTEP: They’re in the conference USA which is guard heavy and the last two player of the years were scoring guards. Not only that I have a good relationship with their coaching staff. Coach Spriggs is from Philadelphia so we have a good connection out there and it’s a different scenery from the city oh Philadelphia. "

"Michigan: I have a real good relationship with Phil Marteli who coached at St. Joes and I’ve always looked up to him growing up. Coach Juwan Howard likes my game and told me that after the game when we played Michigan. Really at the end of the day it’s Michigan. It’s the Big 10 and I know I can play at that level so now it just comes down to building on the relationship with the coaching staff."

Kinda sounds like it's Michigan. Unless I misunderstand where he says "it’s Michigan."

At Michigan he's just another guy. Here he's a starter.

At Michigan, his games are on CBS, ESPN, and BTN, every single one. At UTEP, his games are on ESPN+, CUSA.tv, Stadium, and CBSSN. At Michigan, he’s playing in front of 12,000. At UTEP, he’s playing in front of 4,000.

Sure thats nice, but it's not the only factor anymore. Players can get to the NBA from anywhere.
It’s more for his friends and family, not his hopes of catching a pro scouts eyes. Imagine how fun it is for UTEP players to tell their friends to watch their games on CUSA.tv for $13 a month.

Could be, but you don't know that. He specifically said that our league is guard heavy and the last two POY were guards. I can only imagine that would be his goal at UTEP. It doesn't take TV time to accomplish that goal.

At Michigan he'll also have the opportunity to play around 14 games against ranked teams at some hostile environments. Some kids like that too.

You’re right I don’t. Does he want to be a starter and play in the basketball classic in front of 4,000 on CUSA.tv most nights or does he want to be a 6th man, playing on TV, and possibly playing in the NCAA or NIT?

Our goal is the NCAA. It has to start somewhere.

Just cause he was recruited to Michigan doesn’t guarantee him playing time. Do want to tell your family and friends to watch you sit on bench.
I don’t know enough about him or Michigan to know if you would get playing time. Can almost guarantee to would here. If your good enough you will get noticed.
NoWins nice to see your time off from posting didn’t effect your negativity towards UTEP.

Hey at least Golding is going after a high level player. There is some stiff competition there, but who cares. It's been proven MANY times that good players will come to UTEP. He has UTEP in his final 6 for a good reason and the starting PG position is there for the taking.

In the past 7 years we've had starting PGs come in from the PAC 12 and Big 12. Now we need the AAC or Big 10 to step in?

Like I said earlier. I won't believe it until I see it. If y'all wanna have your orange colored glasses on, that's fine too. Not everyone has to see life the same way.

It’s facts. A basketball player would only choose UTEP over Michigan because of playing time and preference to the city/school/coaching staff. We’re talking about UTEP vs Michigan, not UTEP vs UTRGV or UTEP vs Nebraska-Omaha.

Obviously. You have nailed your point home. We get it.

I think the major difference is that our HC'S at that time had a reputation as outstanding recruiters.

Many times through the year I heard people say "we would have lost this game if Terry was coaching." Time and time again Terry proved he was much better at getting talent than coaching it.

Is it completely out of the question to be doubtful regarding Golding's recruiting? After all that's the reputation he carries around.

No. Not at all. I have been iffy about Golding's ability to recruit since he was hired. I decided to give him a full cycle (through this spring to early summer) to see if he could prove me wrong. I'm just putting out there my opinion of what this team needs to win and what he should go after. His grade is not complete, but he failed to bring in a transfer big last year when that's what the team needed.

Also and for the record I DO NOT think Golding is a great X's and O's coach. I have been a parrot repeating how many times I've said that I can't stand the double teams from our bigs out front and then later his inability or stubborness to implement a secondary defense. I also think our offense gets very stagnant when 3 pointers aren't falling. I think Golding has great energy and makes his relationships with his players a priority, but as a coach/recruiter he has a ways to go.

Another thing is the staff. What have they done to help us recruit or improve Xs and Os? I really don't know the dynamic there. Has any of them stood out in any particular area?

He has a reputation already? How is that? From coaching at Abilene? I mean seriously!
IMHO to be successful at schools like UTEP, you need to get missed talent, kids with grade issues, and transfers THEN coach them up. It's VERY unlikely we will win ANY recruiting battles with Michigan regardless of who our couch is or how they may be connected here.
Terry recruited great athletes. That didn't translate to wins or those kids improving at all.
While YOU may not be impressed with the kids, what say we wait until he gets the kids in school and playing before we knock his recruiting? Eh?

Disclaimer: I'm not sold yet, but I am willing to see the product on the floor first.
And Ax...Last season totally impressed me with his coaching, especially compared to our last to chump coaches.

Yes I certainly agree that Golding is a way better coach than Terry (aside from recruiting so far), but I think he still has a ways to go and I think he would agree.

Regarding recruiting competition with bigger schools, meh. I know we can't win them all, but we can win some. It's not a big excuse for me since I've seen what we can do in the recent past. I dont exclude players just because bigger schools are recruiting them. Golding is not either.

I learned about his reputation on this board. Last year I didn't buy into in and was 100% convinced he would have no problem plucking the one piece the team needed.

Who says I'm not impressed? All I'm saying is that I'm not jumping on the Lewis, Newton, and or Sessoms train until they're on the court playing for UTEP. Nor do I think Golding needs those high profile players to have success.

I did wait a full season before "knocking" on his recruits. Other than Sibley I don't think any of them had an impact on the team.

I still think UTEP missed out by not picking Jans. He got the Miss St job, but that was because of NMSU success. UTEP probably could have kept him for a few years. Golding will probably bolt at the sniff of any success. Which is fine, means UTEP is doing good. Just felt Jans was a better coach and recruiter.

Imo I don't think he was ever serious about the UTEP job. He used the interview to negotiate a pay raise at NMSU. It all worked out for him since a year later he's making more money than what NMSU and UTEP could pay him combined.

But he will be out like in 2 years and back working as a assistant. He took a very difficult job in the SEC.

Only rumors. NMSU nor Jans put out a press release that he was interviewed! Only a MinerDigs rumor!!

He'll have plenty of HC offers at a lower mid major program.
Plus, he was able to get that big gig at a P5 school after some said he would never get hired again after his firing from Bowling Green for inappropriate behavior. His slate is essentially wiped clean. The hypocrisy of the NCAA never ceases to amaze. How soon will it be for Jans' old boss, Gregg Marshall, gets another chance? It's refreshing to see these institutions for higher education hiring these amazing role models for their student-athletes. 😑

He had to work in Las Cruces for 5 years...he's paid his debt to society.
