Who Does CUSA Add?

Anyone think we would've been in a better position if we had gotten Lisa Campos? She's killing it at UTSA. I feel she would've been more proactive and less reactive than Senter.
I don't. She couldn't bring the central texas market and the millions of college football fans to El Paso.

I find it hard to believe they're excited to add Charlotte with their 15,000-capacity field. Nobody cares about Rice (unless they want to add them for academic reasons).

I can understand UNT and UTSA, and UAB would be a good fit. FAU has made major investments in their football program.

But I'd think App St. or Troy would be worth a look before adding Charlotte and Rice. Or from outside the Sun Belt, Liberty.
It's clear ESPN is behind this. That's why none of the SB schools were ever under consideration. CUSA pissed off ESPN years ago and ESPN is going to do everything they can to diminish the value of the league. After all we're not under contract with them. SB and AAC are. They need inventory for their networks. Fully expect SB to raid CUSA next.

Maybe. Depends on who she would have hired instead of Dimel and Terry. Not confident it would have made a difference though. Now, had Stull made some better coaching decisions years earlier, that definitely makes a difference.

Don't forget that El Paso supports the Sun Bowl with car rental money.
El Paso wants the tourism dollars from major market teams and the publicity of a major network. That's why they invest hotel occupancy tax in the Sun Bowl. El Paso doesn't need the 1000 fans that will travel to watch Wyoming play here.

I wouldn’t go that far since ESPN does have some CUSA inventory.

What espn+? CUSA spurned ESPN to join Fox years ago. ESPN is protecting their conferences. In any other scenario AAC would have added the best teams regardless of what conference they're in. ESPN is dictating who gets added. That's why AAC tried to devalue the MW first but their schools have a good enough deal with CBS Sports and Fox to say no. CUSA had no chance.

This would make some sense and would explain some of these otherwise baffling choices.

Follow the trail. Texas and OU to an SEC that recently signed a contract with ESPN. ESPN didn't like sharing their Big 12 TV rights with Fox. That's why everything started. Originally it looked as if the AAC (ESPN) would pick apart the remainder of Big 12.

That didn't work so AAC and ESPN moved on to plan B. Devalue another conference with a rival TV contract, the MW. That also didn't work so on to plan C. Devalue the only other conference not signed with ESPN, CUSA. MAC/SB untouched since they have tv contracts with ESPN.

If ESPN involvement can be proven, CUSA might try threatening an antitrust lawsuit.

I doubt she would have taken the job, didn't our 1st two options turn us down (including a UTEP alum)?

UTEP's best bet is to keep improving in football and basketball and become attractive enough for the MWC, which should naturally be our own regional conference.

How's that strategy paying off so far? We don't improve and when we do we can't keep the momentum going.

I find it interesting that the story is buried on ESPN...if there at all. This is one of their conferences and no mention of the BIG change that's about to happen. Just shows that outside of the big five conferences, the rest of college football is an afterthought nationally.

Doing the same thing that has failed, over and over again and expecting a different outcome will be our doom.
What we've been doing over and over has been losing, so nobody wants us. When Price and Billy G. were here, we were winning, and CUSA wanted us and took us from the WAC. So we know that winning works. It's just that we haven't been winning for a long time.

Keep winning and we can have a conversation with the MWC. Until then, they're not going to take our calls. That's just the reality of the situation.

SO wait, Senter was UTEP's 3/4th choice? Everyone ahead of him declined?
The only “fact” is that Campos took her name out of the running before Senter was named AD. Whether that was because UTEP told her she wasn’t going to get it or because she wanted UTSA more, not sure.

I think we would be in a better position if El Paso was a top 30 TV market.
Lol well that ain't the case until they count j town. Also most of these teams that are being brought in are non relevant teams in their market so if you have 2 million TV's vs 300,000 TV's. However maybe 30,000 TV's in the 2 million market watch that junk team and 120,00 tvs watch the one with 300,000 TV's which is better?

That's a question for ESPN.

I mean, if the AAC doesn't want Liberty, then CUSA should definitely take them.
CUSA had an opportunity to get Liberty and 24 million dollars when they practically wanted to buy their way into CUSA. Now Liberty has their own TV deal with ESPN and a pretty full schedule for the years to come. It won't be as easy to convince them to drop their ESPN TV contract for our Facebook live deal and renegotiate all the games on their future schedule.

CUSA wanted to act like God's gift to college football when they turned down espn for fox. Years later fox dropped us. When they told the SB to fack off about a geographically realignment. Now SB controls the fate of CUSA. And when they told Liberty naw we rather add markets. All those market schools left CUSA at the first chance.

CUSA is in a tough spot. We'll see if they can survive.

"Actually, it’s mostly out of towners that are doing the actual supporting."

Pure Bullshit-
local businesses, car dealerships, hotels and the like contribute millions in tickets, in kind gifts and free meals. Car dealerships alone have 30-50 free cars to drive during the week and give out 1000's of purchased tickets to employees and customers. Locals make up the bulk of ticket sales, those who attend events as well as work and contribute to the Sun Bowl.

I doubt it. Every single CUSA school would jump ship for greener pastures if given the opportunity. I expect the worst case scenario to unfold for UTEP over the next few months. UTPB, Lamar, Incarnate Word here we come! Depressing, utterly depressing.

The AAC fans commenting in that thread seem unimpressed.
No doubt. Lose your best in UCF, UH and Cincinnati. Then in return gain a couple good schools, a couple mediocre schools and a couple sub par schools in terms of talent from a “lesser” conference and there will be some fans not so happy about it. It’s a huge downgrade. But still perhaps a smart move for conference security sake.

Was only talking about the car rental tax

Sometimes fans are unrealistic. Just look at at the posts here of fans suggesting we move to the MWC or add soccer.

When the Big 12 lost OU and UT, who did they think they were going to get? Michigan and UCLA? Northwestern?

Just like CUSA fans, who do you really expect to join CUSA? South Florida, East Carolina, SMU? Get real. Just have a bunch of Fili’s spitting out any thought that comes to their head.

That’s not the point. The UT and OU defections came out of left field as far as fans were concerned. It’s not all about WHO they are going to replace them with, it’s THAT they have to replace them. Obviously it’s going to be a downgrade to replace those two…no matter who they get. That’s the original disappointment.

The AAC then goes after some shit teams as far as athletic competency goes. Some good competition was left on the table…uninvited. I’d be frustrated about that as well. It’s a huge downgrade for the conference and the only thing that could have been done is to mitigate the losses. The AAC hardly has done that.

And I have no doubt you’d have your complaints too. I know I would.
