Official Sun Bowl Domers vs. Beavers thread

Biggest question is who plays the ACC in future Sun Bowls.

Article in The Times said Sun Bowl still under contract with PAC 12/Pac 2.

Olivias said ‘I don’t know.’

Is PAC 12 still under contract to play in Sun Bowl? If so do they have to pay for breaking the contract?

We will probably get the 12th pick from the AAC and idiot bernie will sing the praises of how lucky we are.

Bernie MAY be a nice guy and all, but he sucks doing this job. He needs to go pronto!

4th pick from the Big 12 would be ok. They would travel here.

I don’t know if he sucks, but I don’t think he does a “good job”.

The Sun Bowl has contracts and only gets to “choose” from a certain amount of teams. He isn’t negotiating with random schools to get them to come here. There’s limitations on who he can bring, so anyone that says he is doing a good job getting teams, is clueless. He brings in what is contractually available to him.

El Paso and the Sun Bowl aren’t going to be anything other than a regular bowl game with 8-4/7-5/6-6 teams. Maybe they get lucky here and there with a 9-3 team, so anyone expecting the Sun Bowl to be better than that, is also clueless.

This year is a home run.

Yeah, great matchup.

Because of infighting within the ACC, Notre Dame ended up being drawn by the Sun Bowl, if I remember correctly. So ND ended up here randomly, not because of Bernie or anything other than luck.

While Oregon St is a solid football team, they are so highly thought of, that they were abandoned by 8 other teams and unwanted by any other power conferences. So what magic did Bernie do to land such a coveted team?

Did I say he did?

Yes, they lucked out getting ND, but I think the Sun Bowl Association deserves credit for their reputation of excellent hospitality and for keeping CBS in the fold.

Did you see the mayonnaise bowl yesterday? ESPN took crass commercialism to a new low.

CBS always puts on a classy broadcast that makes El Paso shine.

Now how long it will last? Who knows.

What do you have against Bernie? How can you say he sucks at his job? We are getting two ranked teams in the Sun Bowl. He does a great job with the Sun Bowl. And, unlike Jim Senter, is not arrogant.

That's how bowls work.

A "regular bowl"? Stop with the BS. Go look at the other bowls with lower level teams. The Sun Bowl is always a great bowl game.

Nobody is expecting better than that.

Would you rather watch NMSU vs. Fresno State or Oregon State vs. Notre Dame?

Why are you so negative about everything?

No, but goes back to the point, that he isn’t some great salesman bringing teams here. It’s either by luck or placement by the leagues. He lucked out (literally) this year.

You clearly don't know how bowls work. Do you think the Fiesta Bowl was happy with Oregon and Liberty?

ALL bowls are by luck and placement.

What’s negative about it?

No, who said I did? Would you rather watch Miami OH vs Appalachian St or Oregon St vs Notre Dame?

And who can forget the 2012 Sun Bowl? Nothing says “great” like a team with a losing record

What's your point? Anybody would rather see Stanford, Pitt, USC, and Georgia Tech than any team in the New Mexico, Tucson Bowl, or any other lower bowl game.

I'm not sure why you're bringing up the 2021 game because the Sun Bowl couldn't control Covid.

You're a negative nancy. You like to complain about anything and everything. That's your modus operandi.

Of course the latter.

The Sun Bowl is a great game and fans love it. You can sit on your couch and cry, while others are enjoying life.

"The Yellow Jackets entered the game with a 6–7 record (5–3 ACC), after losing to Florida State in the 2012 ACC Championship Game. Georgia Tech had to request for a postseason waiver that was granted in order to participate as a result of the conference championship game the Yellow Jackets played under extenuating circumstances caused by sanctions on the two teams ahead of them in division standings."

My point, EP, is that it's bernies job to get these bowl tie ins. The ones we have blow.
The point of the sun bowl is to promote el paso and possibly increase tourism. Yes its cool we've been on CBS for a bazillion years and yes, they do a good job. However, the idea should be to align the bowl with conferences that might bring people to town AND get people to watch on TV.
It's great that the game sold out. It will look awesome on TV. However 90% of the fans are from the surrounding area and ONLY because the domers fell into our lap.
Furthermore, he's the one that oversee the basketball tournament. How's that working out?.
Bernie is a nice old dude that everyone loves. Therefore they ignore progress and job performance.
You like what he's done. I don't. Cool..

Here is my 2 cents on Bernie Olivas:

The average Bowl Director Salary is around $450,000. Bernie is ‘only’ making about $250,000.

Bernie began this position in 2001.

Bowls are all about Conference Alignment, payouts and pecking order.

In 1997, El Paso created a Car Rental Tax to increase their Bowl Payout. The CBS deal is a favor, the Bowl Game gets relatively no money from CBS.

Several Bowl games have passed the Sun Bowl in pecking order and payouts during the Olivas era, including newly formed games. Car rental tax and attendance is still the main funding of the Bowl.

The Basketball tournament is not sustainable. I don’t see an improved future and that’s more on the NCAA than Olivas.

I assume Bernie Olivas is a nice guy, but the question that has to be asked is if the Sun Bowl is an a better place than in 2001?

For me it’s not. I think we have had occasional good match ups, more through luck than a consistent effort.

I am very concerned for where the game is going based on recent comments. Olivas said last night that we are currently under contract with the PAC12/2 and that Olivas met with the Oregon State AD and they feel like the PAC12/2 will rise again.

I think Bernie’s response is typical to his job performance over the years. He’s a not a proactive leader. He is always going to wait it out and see where the chips land.

I would say that Bernie Olivas is basically the Tim Floyd of Bowl Directors

Is there a realistic way to increase the payout by the Sun Bowl to attract better teams? That's one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that would determine how well Bernie Olivas is doing. A previous comment was on getting more out of town visitors to come to the game. That's a good idea, but which conference tie ins would fit that bill? Any thoughts?

Honestly, I think big 12 and mountain west. They are closest and could bring more people. That would help with them staying in hotels and renting cars.
Filling the bowl is cool, but doesn't move the needle at all on financing it.

No they wouldn’t. SJSU, Wyoming, SDSU, UNLV, Nevada, and others don’t even fill their own stadium. They certainly aren’t traveling to El Paso around New Years to watch their team. Only the Lobos would bring fans, even then, most of them would only stay 1 night - if that.

Bowl games are for affluent, hardcore, or nearby fans. How many UTEP fans went to the Boise and GMAC bowls?

The Big 12 wouldn’t either, aside from the Arizona schools and Texas Tech. The others would be lucky to send 5,000. El Paso isn’t a desirable travel destination - especially for affluent white people.

People from 3rd world Venezuela don’t even want to be here! They want to go to Denver, Chicago, and New York as soon as they can.

Bowl travelers are the same. The Sun Bowl is lucky it’s locally supported.

Disagree re: B12 — I think they’d travel pretty well depending on the matchup of course.
