Possible head basketball coaches

I wasn't aware of that, where'd you hear that? Do you just make up fictious things to annoy or do you really just get false facts. I saw nothing about Ron Sanchez UV Assistant Coach being a convicted felon. If by some miracle your correct, then if he's good enough for UV #2 in the Nation and one of the Top Assistants in D1. Why not for us?

My mistake, I have no clue who I was thinking of. Should have done more research before posting. Thanks for the correction.

Some smart ass put "Rick Pitino" will be UTEP's next coach on the FB feed of UTEP/MTSU game live feed. I thought this site would go nutz.

Surprised no one has mentioned Tom Crean.

My big question is.....does Senter and boosters pay big for a football coach, and go the cheap hot assistant coach route for basketball or vise versa, or spend big for both?

Cantu ain't bad, apparently he's texting every media member in EP saying he really really really really wants the job. He's not a true Floyd disciple, Floyd kept him around at USC because the vato can recruit like a mf, and I can say for a fact he left for Portland because of Floyd's stubborn old school ways and the way Floyd changed his recruiting areas with Chicago and midwest now, Floyd was staying away from California it appeared and didn't need Bob anymore. He's hungry, he will give us a modern player friendly culture we desperately need..

But Crean or Cross would be my top two wants.

On Virginia's Ron Sanchez ...

  • "He is a good combination of a guy who can go get you a top-50 guy, and someone on that staff keeps identifying three-star guys who can get it done at a high, high level. They can out-recruit some people and out-evaluate others. That's a pretty damn good combo in my opinion."
  • "Ron and I have known each other in the last few years, gotten to be really close. I think he's sharp, he gets it. I think that it's important that you consider minority assistants. I think he's won, and won at different places. He's been with Tony Bennett the entire time but he's won at different places. Because of that, because of how Ron came up through the system, he had to earn his keep. His path to where he is and the level of success he's had to maintain, I think that's why he'll be a great head coach."

So...has he told you he wants to be UTEP'S coach, have they contacted him, has he contacted them, is he available, have you discussed the situation with him?

That would be nice to know. This is a basketball coach, not the head of the NSA we're hiring. All these rumors are just like a priest giving someone absolution after they drop a huge donation but still cheat on the spouse......it don't mean shat!

Who said, "Ron and I have known each other for years, etc. " in your Monday post? When I first read it, I thought it was you.

Candidates for the @UTEP_MBB job.

Ulric Maligi: HELL NO! Don't interview him Senter! UTEP needs someone with not the slightest taint of any prior problems (see link). Now is not the time in UTEP basketball history for 2nd chances after what the program and fans have been through! https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/co...n-despite-ominous-cloud-of-ncaa-investigation

Carlin Hartman: OU has been impressive the last few years but nothing screams out to be a HC at UTEP. He's 45 but nothing stands out at this level except his stints at Rice (twice).

Jerome Tang: He got promoted last year at Baylor to 2nd is command, however, Baylor major revenue sports athletics have been under scrutiny for, ooohhhh.....say fifteen or so years? I don't see major programs across the country picking assistants off the Baylor athletic tree with great zeal. Baylor athletics needs to get right with God, no pun intended. Like Asst Maligi, I'd leave it alone given the plethora of top assistants out there.

Duane Broussard: If I was the private firm hired by UTEP to look for an HC, he would be on the short list. He is a national recruiter and goes after top talent. His direct boss is a jerk of major proportions and my gut tells me he will tell Duane "UTEP?! You gotta be f?*&^!@ kidding me?!". So, put a line through his name.

Ryan Miller: He is a vagabond assistant. Worked under Barbee at Auburn. Good programs on his resume but the questions screams out "why hasn't anyone else hired him as an HC?". Nothing wrong with being an assistant. Maybe Barbee will bring him IF Barbee were to be hired back at UTEP (if he did throw his hat in the ring)?

Ray Harper, Jacksonville State
Randy Rahe, Weber State
Joe Dooley, Florida Gulf Coast

Is this speculation, or do you have a source? None of them has a bad resume, but they don't really stand out either.

I’m shocked to hear that Senter is looking at these candidates from small colleges. There’s got to be some interest from top level assistants at major college programs. UTEP basketball has a good history of attracting top assistants like Gillespie and Barbee, who had great success here. Let’s hope we hear of other candidates who can get the fan base excited.

When hiring a new coach, there are three popular methods:

1. If successful, promote from within. This is obviously what we did with Doc Sadler. It's just as obvious that this method won't apply to our current situation.

2. Hire a hot shot assistant from a bigger school. This worked well for us with Billy G and Barbee, not so well with Rab.

3. Hire a successful coach at a smaller school.

The list provided follows this third path, which isn't a bad idea. There is a question in my mind whether the list is speculation, a partial list of candidates, or the complete list of finalists. I hope that it's not the latter, as I found it to be a bit underwhelming.

Okay, I heard on the way home that these three plus Foster were the candidates that Senter interviewed in Dallas. I hope that there are others still to be interviewed.

Maniac, these are indeed the ones interviewed.BUT, it is not a final list. MY sources say we are not done...

Although...I am ok with these guys. Sexy ? no. Will they build a great program here? probably.

Ray Harper couldn’t get it done at Western Kentucky. What makes us think he could get it done at UTEP? Not only “no way” but “no effing way!”

Aside from maybe two outlier seasons, Randy Rahe is a perennial 20 game winner...in a weak ass conference. Is that what we want? Some seemed to think Floyd getting us to 20 wins was a feat. I guess I just want more. No thanks.

Foster may well turn out to be a good college coach down the road if he pursues it and gets a shot, however giving him the job would be a gamble that we can ill afford to lose. Not this time around Greg.

If I had to choose from the 4, I’d probably go with Dooley. With that said, he never won more than 17 games at ECU. He’s never had less than 20 wins while at FGCU, but all of those seasons, save for one, also came with at least 11 losses. I’d only choose him if those were the only four choices, otherwise, pass.

We have got to do better...much better.

If any of these 4 end up as our HC; don't expect me at any games until they make the NCAAs. These candidates wouldn't get serious consideration at a real school.

Y'all act like you have a clue. I don't, and I own it.

It’s an OPINION based upon what I know of the candidates, and or what research I’ve done on them. I thought we came to a consensus on the board that most of what we discuss is opinion based. No? I have an opinion. I own that.

Have a shot, man. Pretty sure you can get it free.:)

We became open to Dimel. Lon Kruger at OU exceeded expectations beyond their hopes. Sounds like Senter is looking to stabilize the major revenue programs. I didn't hear the show. We're not most attractive fella at the mid-major high school dance as of this point in time. If UTEP is the land of 2nd chances, just don't get one with baggage and hire one who plays by the rules and runs a clean program, gets players walking away with a diploma and aims high for good recruits with a good head on their shoulders.

I'm all for running a clean program that graduates athletes. But, to me, the ultimate goal is winning. Winning means consistently competing for conference championships and the NCAA tournament. I'm not sure I see that type of coach in this early batch, but the real litmus test will come from results on the court. There have been too many excuses put forth by previous coaches, in particular Floyd, that would not fly at other schools, and should not be tolerated at UTEP either. When he was first hired at UTEP, Senter mentioned he would be very selective in who he hitched his wagon to, because he would be held accountable. I hope that is his mindset with the basketball hire.

Let’s just hope Dooley, Harper, and Rahe are on Senters list for coaches with head coaching experience and he is still waiting to interview the top assistant coaches to finishing his assistant coach list. It’s frustrating how we went from having a 70% chance of landing a top assistant coach named Ron Sanchez to “ big giant yawn” Dooley, Harper, and Rahe.

Are fans here ripping on Dooley because 20 years ago he was canned at ECU? He has since been an assistant at Wyo, UNM and 10 years at Kansas before getting another HC job at FGCU. At FGCU for 5 years now and has 1 CIT, 2 NIT, 2 NCAA appearances. If he was still at Kansas as a top assistant would you want him? But you don't want him because he has been successful for 5 years as a HC at a smaller school? I don't get it.

You do make good points MIW. Much like the Dimel hire, a guy like Dooley, while not a flashy hire by any means, may be the safest bet for Senter. With regards to hiring a hot shot assistant from a top program, I would think that the current FBI investigation may be a red flag for an AD as well, if one of those guys applied. Why would an AD want to take a chance with any assistant from one of those programs? Just speculation.

I would take Dooley over the other 3. He absolutely sucked at ECU and he is 0-4 in his post season appearances. This season marks the 2nd time he won the regular season title at FGCU and couldn't get it done in the tournament. The ASun plays those games at campus sites, meaning he's lost at home twice when it matters.

Not to mention, this guy allegedly went to Dallas the day before the championship game to interview for this job? His team was down 32 points at one point in the game.

It’s an OPINION based upon what I know of the candidates, and or what research I’ve done on them. I thought we came to a consensus on the board that most of what we discuss is opinion based. No? I have an opinion. I own that.

Have a shot, man. Pretty sure you can get it free.:)
LOL....good points....and great advice. I think I will today before I go vote! Ha!

Sorry man, I didn't mean to come across as an a hole. I do that frequently...

Interesting observation. Why would he do that? Honestly, it's not like UTEP is that huge of a step up.
As for the rest, I don't have a problem with it. Hell man, he's WON the regular season title. Been forever for us...

This is not correct. 100% Untrue

You did say allegedly, so there's that. We don't know. If he did that then his current school should fire him.

Haha. It’s all good, my friend. You didn’t come off as an “a hole”. I just tend to over explain myself at times.

The “shot” part was just my attempt to keep it light.
