Let's all Relax regarding Basketball, its actually a good thing

Yes, I would love to go 31-0 just like everyone, but let's see the forest from the trees

1) What is UTEP's mantra, 10:33, right? That means all these games in November to March don't really matter and the team is not focused on that. Let's all wait until the CUSA Tournament, we fall behind by 11 in the 2nd half, and then turn it on and win 3 games in a row and make the NCAA Tournament with a 16-14 record and a 15 seed. Isn't that what matters? So just take it down.

2) Golding is smart. How many fans will make the trip to Huntsville? Maybe 70? And there will be maybe 3,500 in the arena? So why not get the team acclimated to playing in empty Don Haskins by getting blown out and training them to play where crowd noise doesn't matter? There will be no home court in Huntsville, so don't let them get acclimated to playing in a rowdy Don.

3) Golding always says teams have to go through adversity. Why start strong and win games, lets have them learn lessons. No better way to say you have a looooong way to go than being #207 according to KenPom. Genius!

4) Let's face it, it is striking how much more NIL money Utah Valley and for that matter Southern Utah and MTSU have than UTEP, NIL is a direct correlation to on the field success, so that means Utah Valley must have nearly 50% more funds than UTEP, indicative of the score. We are so far behind, so really, this falls on us as fans, have you donated because until you do, there is nothing, let me be clear, nothing for UTEP to do. Keep expecting huge blowouts until you send in $9.15. Yes typically, the team has to win over the fans and show something for the money we all pay in season tickets, merch, etc - but that's not the case for UTEP. Senter & Golding can go to bed resting easily knowing this is 100% on fans and donors.

OPT: UTEP vs KSU

Let me kick things off since there’s been no buzz around this yet. In what promises to be the low scoring showdown of the year, UTEP and KSU will battle to see who can put up fewer points. With UTEP averaging 16.6 points per game and KSU at 14.9, it’s bound to be a grind. I’ll go with the averages. UTEP edges out KSU in a nail biter, 17-15.

Walden's Offense versus Dimel's Offense

With good reason, Dana Dimel has become the standard for bad offenses here at UTEP. I don't know how many times that I've read this season that Walden's offense is almost as bad as Dimel's. I counter that it may be worse. Below are the numbers comparing Walden's offense so far this year with Dimel's offenses year by year:

Walden. 320.7 ypg. 17 0 ppg
Dimel
2018. 307.7 ypg. 17.7 ppg
2019. 329.2 ypg. 19.6 ppg
2020. 348.1 ypg. 23.0 ppg
2021. 392.2 ypg. 29.8 ppg
2022. 348.8 ypg. 24.4 ppg
2023. 362.2 ypg. 19.9 ppg

To be fair to Scotty he is averaging slightly more yards per game than Dimel did in his first year: however, in the most important function of an offense, scoring, he is slightly behind. And he is behind the rest of Dimel's offenses. In my opinion Dimel had a bigger challenge to overcome his first season. Dana inherited a team that had gone winless, and the transfer portal back then wasn't what it is now, making it much harder for a team to reinvent itself in a single year. Walden took over a squad that wasn't quite as bad, winning three games last year, and the current transfer portal allows you to bring in transfers that don't have to sit for a season. Still, his offense can't manufacture as many ppg as Dimel's initial squad did.

To make things worse, after six painful years of enduring Dimel ball, Senter knew that fans wanted a more dynamic offense. That is what we were promised when Walden was hired. Yet we've been given an offense that's possibly worse than Dimel's. That should have been an easy bar to clear.

Now Walden deserves more time to try to build his team here. But in this early stage I see no signs of improvement over the previous regime.

Competing Miner Games on Saturday

Miner fans will be left with a conundrum (Fili, someone on social media should be able to define this for you) on Saturday: whether to watch Miner Football or Basketball. At 2PM MST (or, for me, 3 PM CST) the football team will play Kennesaw State; at the same time, the basketball team will play at Utah Valley. Now for those who live in El Paso and want to go to a game, the choice is obviously easy. For those either don't want to or can't attend, the choice becomes more difficult.

If the conflict had come during the Tennessee game the choice would be easy: watch basketball. Who wants to watch their team lose by more than 50 points when there is a better alternative? However, the Kennesaw State game is one of the two remaining games that we might have a chance to win. If the conflict had come when the basketball team was playing UTPB then again it would be an easy choice, as a potentially competitive football game would take precedence over another glorified scrimmage. But while not a great barometer, as Utah Valley finished .500 last year and was picked to finish 5th in the WAC this year, it's still a game against a legitimate D1 team on the road.

In my case, there's always the possibility that my wife might have something planned that I don't know about, taking the decision out of my hands. Otherwise I'll have to make a choice to watch one while following the other on my phone, with the option to switch if I'm not happy.
