Coach Terry makes 1st UTEP offer / Basketball Recruiting

I saw that he was offered by the aggies way back..maybe when Weir was there. Hopefully he has learned from some of his brother's mistakes. His is big and pretty skilled. He was recently offered by KSU and UNLV too.

Maybe. His brother just never got his shit together. The run around with him had no bounds. If Antawn isn’t like Anthony, and has his stuff together, then yeah, I like what I saw on tape.

I beleive you are thinking of Ezeagu. Alvarez has some big time offers listed including Virginia and Purdue.
That was two different posts brotha. One was about the Canadian Kid the other was just saying I like Alvarez and his tapes. Not about the same young fella.

Got it. We are battling some high majors in this late period. I know they are trying to scoop up late bloomers, but this never happened under Floyd. He was always scrambling. I've said that I wasn't a big fan of the Terry hire, but he is off to a good start I would say. I may feel even better next week. Snowball effect is coming..

I am really looking forward to what type of class Terry can bring in with a full year under his belt. That’s why I almost feel like it isn’t a must that they sign a full class. Leave some room to get guys that you have recruited for a full year.

I definitely agree, but we need 9-10 players this year to have productive practices (depending on the walkons). The guys need competition. That would still leave us with 3-4 spots next year depending on any transfers Terry can bring in.

So i guess Utep didnt have enough Candy?
I like how the sister tweets thanking all the coaches. She sounds like she also got a scholarship .

Jesus can come down and move the Vatican downtown, provide safety for immigrants, get the city to reduce property taxes, have all highway and road construction complete with one hand gesture, make UTEP football a consistent winner and BCS Champ and there would be an anti- all of it committee set up with 72 hours.

A little bit of film on January working out..

You can tell he needs work. Wasn’t a fan of his dribbling. But at least he’s trying to improve.

But this does bring up a good point about how we’re always talking about big men. This kid is 6’11 and he’s trying to dribble around picks, crossover, do step back jumpers. So are we going after a 6’11 wing player, or a 6’11 kid who wants to bang down low and fight for position/play D?

Senter setting a “fan” straight.

That same negative attitude is prevalent among one or two posters here.

JR Sportfan is not a Miner fan and has never claimed to be. He likes to talk crap for no reason. It’s just what he does. I am not like him.

I used to be an avid UTEP fan and went to many games, some of out of town even. I just think that after going 50 years and 26 years without significant post season wins and few conference titles during that time, I need something to show for my money.

Just like you would stop going to a crappy restaurant, I stopped going to mediocre sporting events. I watch on my tv and the web and listen sometimes on the radio.

I can not blame anyone who is skeptical, especially if they have supported UTEP for a long time. The problems that Senter, Dimmel, Terry and everyone else have to overcome are decades in the making. There is a deep seeded belief in this city that UTEP is/always will be a perennial loser in the major sports. And unfortunately (whether it be bad luck/incompitence/evil spirits) the university has unknowingly justified that belief with a 50 year bowl win drought and a 26 year NCAA Tourney win drought. So aside from building successful programs this Administration needs to work on repairing decades worth of mistrust within the fan base/city/alumni. But that guy who was talking sh*t to Senter for absolutely no reason, just comes off like a d*ck.

Now my question to you ShovelMan would be, given how bad UTEP was last year in both sports: wWat would you consider a reasonable expectation for Football and Basketball next year? Aside from bowl/NCAA tournament wins (obviously) would there be anything else that would make you turn that frown upside down?

I like Jim Senter's optimism and I think he is a very nice guy and definitely a much better option than Stull, but right now he is like a car salesman because that is all he can do right now. The car salesman will say anything to get you to buy the car, just like Senter will say anything to get you to buy tickets.

He says UTEP WILL change in a big way. But what does that even mean? He never said anything specific. He never said UTEP will win a bowl game or will win games in the NCAA tournament.

If UTEP football wins half of their games next year that would be a big change from last year. If UTEP wins a postseason game in any tournament next in basketball that would be a big change from what we have experienced the last 10 years.

I hope we don't get to this, but what will Senter say if things don't change in one year, two years, etc.

It's great to be optimistic, but soon enough Senter will have to do more than play the role of the cheerleader.

Next year we won't see the fruits of Seters labor in abundance. Football I predict will win 3-5 and bask I have no idea. Both teams are still 2 or 3 years away. With that said I like the positivity and sicosk media involvement along with the coaches in place. It'll just take a couple of years to see the fruits guys.

The fact is that you can only be positive for so long.

You can say things will happen all you want, but at the end of the day you have to make those things happen.

Kugler said things would change at UTEP and things would be different than under Price and he did much worse than Price. Floyd said he would bring basketball back to its winning ways and he did worse than the coaches before him.

Only time will tell if great things will happen at UTEP.

That guy wasn’t even directly talking to Senter. Senter just responded to that post.

I don’t have any expectations for them next season. If Dimel beats NAU, he is set for the year and you won’t see me bitching about it. If he goes 0-12, he should be fired. Seriously.

Terry needs to win at least 5 CUSA games and win a few in non-conference. If even they lose by 30 to Arizona, I’m fine with that. I’d rather see them lose to UofA than beat some SWAC team.

For me to clear my social schedule for them like in the past; Conference titles, Bowl win, and NCAA appearance or NIT Championship.

What does everyone expect Senter to say? “Don’t buy tickets” “It will be another 10 years for a bowl win” “CUSA is terrible”? I mean come on. He’s in PR and his job to is build the brand and sell tickets. There is no negative AD out there. Senter is positive because he has to be and he’s on Twitter. Bob Stull was probably just as positive, but was not on Twitter.

I like Senter and am glad he was hired. Doesn’t mean I’m ready to predict great things and expect things will change soon.

The one thing that I am worried about is the NAU game. It's sort of like a trap game because if UTEP wins then that's great, but if they lose it will be very detrimental. NAU is not a bad team and they can easily beat UTEP. My guess is there are going to be a lot of fair weather fans at the first game and losing that game would keep those fans away the rest of the season.

C'mon man buy your football season tickets already - UTEP matters ...

But that’s every year at UTEP isn’t it? First game has a good crowd, then somewhere up front they take a big time whooping and then from there the crowd slowly dies. But that’s what I’m saying about the job Senter, and the coaches have. They have to somehow reverse that trend where after those losses people throw up their hands and go “Typical UTEP, I’m done.” And let’s be honest here, it got so bad at points these last couple of years that we were emailing Natalicio and Bob Stull to voice our displeasure, and people on this board were canceling season tickets. Which I understand, because everyone has a breaking point.

This Athletic Department is just starting a complete overhaul and I think we’re foolish if we believe success can be achieved overnight. But I’m willing to accept growing pains as long as there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But I do agree that the NAU game will be very interesting. New coach, new QB, new offense and defense. Everything about this team is a complete unknown. Last year’s team would have been hard pressed to beat anybody, so I want to see if they added enough pieces and changed enough schematically to where they can field a competitive team. And if they lose (and God forbid they lose bad) even I will be hard pressed to slit my throat and cash out.

UTEP only got 19,136 fans last year for their first home game. My guess is not more than 30,000 fans will attend the NAU game. It's crucial UTEP wins that game to keep those fair weather fans.

I totally agree with what you say and you make a lot of great points.

I'm actually worried and excited to see the new team in action because there are so many unknowns.

Fair enough. I can respect the fact you’re not setting the bar unreasonably high for next year. Personally I can’t see the team going 0-12 just because they’re at least going to try to be more explosive on offense and if Locksley is who we think he is they have to get one win. As bad as they were last year they were a FG away from beating WKU. And really, I can’t fault anyone for expecting a bowl win or NCAA tournament win either. Those are all reasonable goals as well.

Hmmm, I wouldn't have used the "used car salesman" since he's not trying to sell us a a lemon of a program. This program as a whole has been, unfortunately, a lemon for a long time.

He has to sell the program (talking about all UTEP sports) to a community that has abandoned their home town university due to a lack of results. He has to sell the program to gain revenue back due to us basically being in the red for many, many years. He has to be a part to sell a program to new coaches. Do you expect him to be like Stull and not visible and just, do everything without any visibility?

You don't like the ambiguity of him saying "UTEP will change" w/o specifics. The first thing that has changed has been him engaging and bringing a higher interest back to UTEP to El Paso. He's changed UTEP by not only making himself as an AD more accessible than the previous regime (how many here have said Stull was arrogant, aloof, etc) and by the coaches being very active in social media. Yes, some may knock the social media aspect, but it's a tool that is here to stay and raises visibility.

As an example of a specific, he's said multiple times (if you been to a town hall) that UTEP needs 4,000 new donors (not high rollers) to be #1 in CUSA; sounds like a specific change to me. You gain those donors, you help put revenue in to the program that not only go to the obvious (scholarships, travel, etc) but also fund other ancillary needs/wants (i.e. people wanting to have those cool lighting effects at the Don that will cost $300,000+).

Senter will change UTEP when UTEP wins a bowl game and goes to the Big Dance on a consistent basis. Right now it's all talk.

I don't care if the coaches are on social media. All I care about is UTEP winning.

Senter said things will change in a big way for UTEP. You mentioned something about needing 4,000 donors. It doesn't matter if Senter got 20,000 donors. You need to win on the field for things to change.

I always laugh when people respond to somebody's post and then that person acts immature when they don't have anything to say.

Again, if you didn't understand the first time, Senter didn't say anything specific. I can't help you if you can't read.

How about this. Until or better yet if the negative results pile up can we at least cheer along with Senter and give him a chance? Or do we have to act all mad and depressed from the last 50 years of bad management?

I do believe this thread is supposed to be about basketball recruiting. Not about your desire to argue on here which you've doing for several years now....

I need to go research this Nemo kid.....

Read my posts again. I never said you can't be positive. In fact I applauded it.
