Who Does CUSA Add?

Only problem is there are no competitive conferences that want us. And our options for competitive FCS teams ready and or willing to move up are extremely limited.

No wants this to be our forever home. While we're in it, for as long as it is, we must make it as comfortable as we can for ourselves.

Assuming the best FCS schools possible join CUSA. Then they start kicking our candy a$s and they get picked to the AAC or MW. How did being in a competitive conference full of FCS teams help us?
Corona, if they kick "our candy ass" then our candy ass should drop football and just become a basketball school and think outside the box and create a west coast basketball only D1 super conference just like CUSA was initially intended to be 26 years ago, a basketball super league. Basketball was first, football was second. (There was intention of football dominating the league, but it turned out that way).

UTEP
Gonzaga
LMU
St Mary's
Long Beach State
NMSU (If willing to drop FBS division football)
GCU (Best option is to be a non profit college, if they can make up their mind)
Seattle U. (Zag traveling partner)
Pepperdine
San Francisco
U of San Diego
Santa Clara
Pacific
BYU

Hijo Su!! How can ESPN not want part of that basketball action?! TV market, well known western U.S. basketball schools? Downside is this will be a west coast super conference that will cannibalize itself, maybe.

Looks like NMSU might be making a move. You would have to think it's knowing CUSA has some commitments elsewhere, likely from some of the Eastern Texas schools mentioed throughout this thread.
Not sure what you're getting at, but I'd assume it's to formally accept CUSA's invitation.

Yeah, the fact that leadership is huddling on a Sunday after a long ass flight from Hawaii tells me they likely got an invitation. I can only see NMSU agreeing if other schools are also on board.

“Great” idea! BYU will surely leave the Big 12 and the P5 that they have desired for a decade to rejoin Santa Clara, LMU, and San Francisco!!

UTEP, frustrated with “similar” other public Texas schools, will surely feel welcome with all these 5,000 student, religious, private schools from California. Ditto Long Beach St and NMSU. Long Beach hasn’t won a NCAA game since 1973. I bet Gonzaga is absolutely drooling to have that basketball power in their league!!!

Again, great, well thought out idea. Very realistic!!

Idaho? Could they be returning to FBS?
Judy said we are going regional so Idaho, UMass, FIU, LT, UTEP all in the same league will probably happen. Our region is generally North America. Is there a university in Mexico City that could join for football only? Our tv deal would be through the roof.

Actually it would be the Hares of Tec de Juarez in all sports. The travel would be extremally cheap and they will be travel partners with UTEP and NMSU. They'll be issuing a press conference tomorrow at 3:00PM http://cdjuarez.tecnm.mx/

Do they even play football in the top tier. Why stop at one Tec de Monterrey? There's like 12 campuses across Mexico that all play top tier football. Bring them all in, let's keep the two CUSA divisions and the championship game. CUSA North and CUSA South....

Below is a good read on the prospects North Dakota State jumping ship to the FBS. Apparently this has been brought up yearly for a long time. After reading it I think the odds are essentially 0% for Conference USA and not much better for any other FBS conference. It comes down to travel costs and what a tv deal would bring them.

Reexamining the North Dakota State to FBS Argument

Mountain West would probably go after them. They would be a good addition to any conference.

Being serious I honestly hope with all of my heart that UTEP gets invited to the MWC (geographically speaking that's where they belong), either if its soon or no later than two years from now. For me that would be the best outcome. And I prefer that than to be in a conference with SHS, Louisiana Monroy, UT Permian Basin, Western NM.

Maybe I am crazy but if we keep western Kentucky , la tech , mid tenn state add nmsu and Sam Houston state to begin with that’s a pretty good basketball conference…. And yes I know football drives everything but that’s a good Bball conference possibly

It’s not bad, but no TV deal will come close to what we’re getting now. If no one sees your product, it will always be considered 2nd rate.

Borregos Salvajes to CUSA. Let's start the movement! CUSAMEXA
I wonder if it would be possible to get some teams from Mexico.
I coached at the University of Nuevo Leon in the 70s.
They have a stadium that seats 75,000
Mexico has what is called a Liga Major ( Major League ) with teams from Mexico City and Nuevo Leon ,Monterrey
We played in stadiums that hold 75,000 and up and they were constantly full.
People don't realize the interest in American Football in Mexico.
In 1977 Monterrey Tech and Nuevo Leon played for the National Championship with the Borrego's beating us.
I know there are teams in Juarez that ply Football but are not in UTEP' s class.
Just a thought

SHSU would be good in football too actually

Then watch them all pass us by and join the MWC? No thanks. Let's start with one.

I played Liga Major basketball in the late 90s, and the level of competition at the highest level of college is maybe D3 or NAIA? The combination of size and speed is just not common in Mexico, you might see one, but not both in athletes. Football is a rich kid sport in Mexico (think lacrosse here). The development levels are made up of over 90% private teams/private schools. In my city, (population of about 700K) there were 2 country club teams, 1 private school team, and two community teams which always struggled to get equipment and kids. Yes, there is lots of passion, but the competition level is so low in the development levels, the top levels aren't competitive compared to the US. I had friends on Tec de Monterrey's football team on 98% athletic scholarship (no such thing as a full ride in Mexico) and the talent level was third string D1 perhaps? Starting TE was 5'8", 200 lbs, but was super fast and could dunk. I don't think there was anyone above 6'1" on that team.

UMASS and UCONN give us two badly needed established fbs programs.
CUSA gives them a badly needed conference home for football.

I forgot to add FIU. It's hard to get them a school close who is ready to move up. The closest is probably JSU and they are probably 800 miles away in North Alabama. Although they make a nice regional team for MTSU. and WKU
