Coach Terry makes 1st UTEP offer / Basketball Recruiting

Likekele's friend Maxey chose Kentucky over OSU, so I think that helps us out. If he had chosen OSU I think Likekele might have wanted to team up with him there.
Yeah he made a whole video out of his announcement...I wonder what Isaac has in store. He has been retweeting some UTEP stuff as well.

I have a bad feeling. If all your friends are buying Benz and beemers you don’t want to be the one getting a ford.

Not everyone is a poser-follower. Guess you are. If you have real friends, they don’t care if you drive a 2016 Audi or 98 Civic.
Ok bandwagon dude. I’ll call you when UTEP starts winning so you can buy tickets again.

What I meant to say is that not everyone is a fake fan. Guess you are. It doesn’t matter if we are 0-12 or 8-4 if you’re a true fan you support the university either way.

Depends on the Ford.

I think isaac passes on us for TT.

He's a 3* who's getting the attention of a 5*, and he's obviously reveling in that. TT normally wouldn't be a big deal, but they've obviously made big strides lately. My guess is that he wants to play for a "bigger" program like most his friends.

If he does ppick Texas Tech or Oakie state. I hope terry schedules them for next year. Then Utep will have a stacked team and beat them .

Tech is set in the backcourt. If would be two years until he experiences full game mode. He comes from a good program and appears to play with a high motor. He has done a good job of staying silent and exploring his options since CRT left Fresno. Nothing wrong with that. If he goes to OSU, you got to admit it would be a helluva recruiting year for them. There's a reason he chose CRT at Fresno versus others and in the end I think he will go with that initial gut feeling.

Tech will play UTEP. OSU I really, really doubt unless they meet up in some holiday tournament.

From what I understand, Fresno was his biggest/best option back then. But, I hope you're right and he sticks with CRT

"big announcement" were tweeted by two recruits more or less at the same time and same verbage and both were aggressively recruited by Terry according to a fan on here (it's on this thread). I'm glad UTEP is keeping major revenue recruiting uniform and professional with these young men. CTF was cluster bomb on certain years. Remember the Chris Sandifer recruiting debacle? Major power conference caliber recruit from L.A. but grades were suspect. Anyways, he got into a war of words with UTEP fans on twitter and it got ugly at times.

UTEP isn’t beating those teams next year. Likelele in tow or not.

Lets see and wait who they get. Maybe not next but in 2 years . The way Terry is recruiting now i expect a very strong team in year 2. Gilyard is going to take us back to tourney i think.

Our priority is Eze, Isaac is playing the right game and we fell for it.

Don't get me wrong it would be great if he lands at UTEP and would
get a chance to be one of our greats. It's up to him.

Eze you can definitely become a star at UTEP. Don't let this opportunity
go up in smoke.

Go Miners...

You all are concerned for no reason. I really do see a ton of Billy in CRT and I really do believe the energy will be flowing again. Terry doesn't show his hand and prefers his recruits don't either. He's paid to win CUSA and go dancing, the rest is up to him (done properly, fairly and they graduate). Leaders don't make a big splash.

CRT is not in question. We know what we need and we need a
big man like Eze. Those big guys are hard to recruit. With that
being said, I think that most of us know what we need and we are
being vocal about it.

GO Miners...

I just liked the Efe approach better. Both 3 star recruits from Texas. Both committed to Terry at Fresno St. Both released from LOI. One already signed with UTEP the other one flirting around.

Mansfield Timberview (TX) high school guard Isaac Likekele, one of Texas Tech’s top remaining targets for the 2018 recruiting class, will announce his commitment via Twitter 4 p.m. (CT) Friday. The three-star prospect is rated as the No. 147 prospect in the country and No. 10 recruit in Texas for the 2018 class by 247Sports composite rankings.

The one-time Fresno State signee was released from his Letter of Intent in April after head coach Rodney Terry left for UTEP. After a fast and furious initial recruitment, Likekele narrowed his list to UTEP, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, then visited each in succession the past three weeks.

Likekele told InsideTheRedRaiders.com previously about Miners coach Rodney Terry: “Since he’s changed to UTEP, I still have the same trust in him, but right now I’m just weighing my options. There could be different opportunities.”

Likekele also discussed what he likes about Texas Tech’s coaching staff.

“I met all of them and they are all great coaches. I feel like they are very key on development and Coach Beard is very key on having his players’ back and all that. I just feel like that’s the type of program I’d like to play for. I definitely want to feel like the coach has my back.”

Finally, Likekele weighed in on what appeals to him about Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boyntonand the Cowboys.

“Coach Boynton is a very young coach. I feel like I have a great relationship with Coach Boynton. Also, he just got his contract renewed so he’s obviously going to be there for quite some time. Stillwater seems like a great atmosphere. I have watched plenty of games and that’s a great place to play.”

KROD ESPN600:

"In today’s NCAA men’s basketball world, prospects have never been more highly regarded.

Recruiting sites grade the best talent available, state by state, offering up stars to high school athletes who they deem are worthy of performing at the next level. Locally, UTEP men’s basketball fans have stepped in recruiting efforts, connecting with Miner prospects on social media like never before. These players, who are 16, 17 and 18 years old, are getting more national media attention and fan and program interaction than ever before.

More recently, Mansfield Timberview guard Isaac Likekele’s recruiting journey has become a household story to tell for avid Miner men’s basketball fans. The 6-foot-4 guard is a 3-star prospect, ranked as the No. 147 prospect in the country and No. 10 recruit in Texas for the 2018 class by 247Sports rankings. His final decision, which he will announce on Twitter at 3 p.m. MT, has been narrowed down to three choices: UTEP, Oklahoma State or Texas Tech.

He told TheTB5Reports, “The UTEP visit went really well, I enjoyed it and enjoyed seeing the local fans and facilities. My relationship with coach RT (UTEP Head Coach Rodney Terry) is very strong and I like that a lot, that's been my guy for the longest.”

As a 6-foot-4 guard, Likekele could fit in a lot of different areas in UTEP’s backcourt. With sophomore guards Evan Gilyard and Kobe Magee being primarily ball handlers, the Miners could use Likekele as a spot-up shooter, like Omega Harris was in his sophomore and junior seasons.

El Paso fans have already fallen in love with Likekele, photoshopping UTEP jerseys and posting it on social media and even photoshopped his photo over LeBron James’ with a Miner jersey. Sites like PickAxe Social and Minerrush continue to push for Likekele coming to UTEP through interaction with the prospect on social media"

A few responses to some of the posts in this thread:

I don't understand criticizing a 17 or 18 year old kid for not making what may be the biggest decision of his life so far according to your time table. If Likelike is smart he has been reviewing the positives and negatives of each school in his head, conferring with those whose advice he trusts most, and searching his feelings for where he really wants to play. With the exception of the restrictions placed on him by the NCAA, he is under no obligation to rush his decision. Criticizing him makes absolutely no sense. While I hope that he chooses to come to UTEP tomorrow, best of luck to him wherever he decides to play.

In regards to Wade and Smith, if an incoming sophomore decides that he wants to transfer, in my opinion transferring to a JC is the smartest way to go. They don't have to sit out for a year, and they get to use that year to build up their resume for more division 1 offers. It beats going to a lower division, or transferring to another division 1 school and sitting for the year. Also, I have no personal issues with these kids leaving. While I would have loved for both to stay, it is not unusual for players, especially underclassmen, to leave when the staff that recruited them is no longer around.

I am going to break one my rules, just this once, but ShovelMan66, can you stop it with the Paul Thomas thing already? I remember criticizing Floyd's recruitment of Cedrick Lang both on here and Kyyote's Den. It seemed to me to be a huge reach, given his high school stats in South Dakota and the fact that South Dakota State seemed to be the only other team recruiting him. During his freshman year I went onto the boards and offered my mea culpa. Fortunately no one hounded me about it for the rest of Ced's career. Nattybry has admitted that he was wrong, that he got over excited about a new recruit. Get over it already.

Here's to hoping that Isaac's decision tomorrow and Eze's next week go our way.

If we get Eze and Ike, we would still only have 9 players for 2018. I think we are in for maybe another suprise on signing day. I don't have any insight, but I'm sure CT has a backup plan other than summer transfers. We would need another PF/C type and Niang committed to FAU. I think Alvarez could still be in the mix too. Anybody else?

Tarke would be an excellent addition for 19'.

Bryson Williams would be an awesome replacement for PT in 19'. He would be an immediate starter.

If pickings are slim does anyone think they could just eat a scholarship, and give it to Rhyanes since hw will be a Senior? No point in locking up a player for four years if they’re not highly valued. Just a thought.

Good to see a good soul on here.

How would you utilize Likekele?

Thanks 2step. If our returning backcourt players continue to improve, and our incoming guards are as talented as we hope, there is nothing wrong with running a three guard offense. Illinois rode a three guard lineup to an undefeated regular season and a national champion runner up not that long ago.

I have to disagree with your comments. Who is criticizing Isaac??? I haven't seen anyone say anything bad about hIM.

The 2nd one where player is transferring. I don't think its a smart move fo D1 player an freshman to transfer to JC. If you going to transfer player should transfer to another D1 program.

Read above. There are comments where people are upset that he's taking so long to make a decision, about him acting like he's a 5 star, and other criticisms. And hey, I get it. I been checking this thread multiple times a day for forever, hoping each time for good news. But as fans I believe that we need to take a step back, realize that this is these kids' lives, and give them time to make their decision.

Did you read my rationale? If they were to transfer to another D1 school they would have to sit out a year. One thing about quality athletes is that they like to play. By going to a JC they get to play right away, and have the opportunity, especially with a good year, of getting recruited again to multiple D1 schools. How is that not a good option?

Anyone else missing work today for the big decision? JK. In all reality what are you all thinking? Does he stay committed to Terry or does he use him as a springboard to the Big 12?

I have a feeling he will choose Texas Tech. If he goes to the Big 12 , I will respect his decision and hope he does well there. We should be fine since we landed that Hawkins kid. We really need that kid from Canada.

Ezeagu is such an “impactful” player that he is deciding between 2 basketball powerhouses - UTEP and Western Michigan.

Hope I’m wrong.
