Coach Terry makes 1st UTEP offer / Basketball Recruiting

Oh ok thanks I'm curious to follow his progression, I really liked this kid, but yeah with Gilyard and Magee he may have even had to redshirt
Gilyard is quite good at getting to the basket, like Tim, and I think he had a better freshman year than Bug. But Hardaway was very strong and athletic, he could dunk fairly easily at 5'11" plus his basketball IQ was through the roof.

That’s a fairly good comparison. Especially considering size/build. You’re right that Gilyard had a better frosh season than Hardaway...point wise at least. However TH had a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio, while EG had a 1.5:2, or there abouts. Tim also shot at over 50%, while Evan was around 38%.

To be fair, Hardaway played in an age where players waited for their turn. He had one helluva mentor in Jeep. That Miner team was also loaded so there wasn’t a whole lot placed on TH’s shoulders. Though not much was expected of him early on, Tim was extremely poised and polished for a freshman. And like you mentioned, his bb IQ bordered on genius. Gilyard, on the other hand, was thrown into the fire immediately on a team that was quite the opposite of loaded. Much was expected/needed of him and he even had to carry the team a time or two. If Gilyard becomes even half the player Hardaway was (I’m exaggerating), we’ll be in good hands for a few years.

I know I’m preaching to the choir jdubb, but I thought it was worth pointing out a few of the differences...perhaps to those unfortunate souls who never got to witness the greatness TimBug was.

UTEP will probably never have another team like that of 1989.
It was explosive everybody contributed. I still remember Antonio
Davis getting those dunks with authority.

Go Miners...
It would be nice if 20 years from now we are remembering this era in the fondest of that one.

Only time will tell.
Its seems as if we can keep this core of players, they can make some history. I believe we are two players away
from having a real good team with a deep bench.

I agree for this year, but I would like to eventually see the end of the bench (players 9/10-13) be a group of players that come in and are groomed to take over 1-8/9. Guys that make practices tough and guys that learn from the older and more experienced players (or transfers that bring that to the table). I would like us to get to the point where Terry can redshirt some younger guys or even have some high level recruits that push starters for their spots as freshman. I want to also see him utilize the prop 48 like the last regime. Good mid-major teams are made to funtion highest at 13 scholarships, even if only 7-8 guys play in the big games. Minimize the player turnover, but when it happens utilize the transfer market to continue balance. The program will just be better as a whole, more consistant and much more appealing. How long do you think this will take? I say 3 years at the rate Terry has started. Win and everything is expedited.

At last, a poster who showing some patience. Predict that by next February, the Miners will be better, but totally agree with axing, the new build-out will not be complete for a couple years.

Please don't take this the wrong way but what axe stated is basically what any D1 HC coach, worth his salt, does. Haskins did it. Billy. Barbee and CTF, somewhat. IMO, Doc just rode the coat tails of Billy's well stocked kitchen to a nice fat Nebraska contract and wasn't in El Paso long enough, IMO.

I'm saying it now with cautious optimism. If we get Bryson Williams for 2019 and keep the players we have and another impact Big. . . 2019-2020 could be Very Special!
Our starting 5 if that happens
G- Evan Gilyard
G- Isaiah Osborne
F- Anthony Tarke
F-Bryson Williams
C- Eze Ezeagu
And a strong bench

I would say the special year would be 20-21. I am expecting progress this
and next year. We could go dancing but we have to win some out of
conference games.

GO Miners...

If UTEP gets as good as we hope, who will agree to schedule the Miners?

We've had this debate on here pretty often 62 (before your arrival).

The better we get, the better our RPI gets. Then better teams will schedule us. That's my opinion. Good teams don't want to come in here and lose to a crappy RPI team. It's too risky and there is no upside for them other than a 'W'. What we need to do right now is play more good teams on the road.

A strong bench indeed. I see Hawkeye and Deon starting pretty damn soon. We've discussed this before, but it really matters more who's on the floor at crunch time. The start of games is generally a neutral; feeling out process while as the game progresses, you adapt accordingly. Players have up and down games and the coach will learn where his best options are as he gets to know his players. Even with just the eight we have right now I see multiple lineup choices.

His offensive game looks strong. Lamont Smith should be very familiar with Boum as the former head coach at San Diego. Boum would need to get stronger especially at the defensive end, but he could do that during his redshirt year. Looks like a solid potential pickup. Watching his highlights remind me a bit of former Miner Antoine Gillespie.

I could care less. Multiple reasons but you can tweet and ask or wait until it comes out
Maybe you don't care. I for one care a lot! There's probably acceptable and non acceptable reasons to transfer. When you know you have to be out a whole year, hopefully for him it's a good reason.

Then go and ask him. I have no litmus test outside of criminal offenses.

Why is he transferring?
Maybe he is 'transferring up'. Yes to UTEP. San Fran may have had a better team last year, but we can all see what is brewing here. Maybe he thinks he out grew his only offer in San Francisco and wants to come to a mid-major where they care about basketball? I don't know.

That's cool for the future and I see that Terry is building for the long game, but we need some more bodies this year still.
Any updates or new info on your list of graduate senior big men? That's what we need now, while we keep building for the future.

Landing a grad transfer for 18' and Bryson Williams for 19' should be top on Terry's list IMO. Boum would be icing on the cake!!

Boum's game reminds me of a right handed version of Brandon Jennings. Of course i'm not saying that he is the same level of player as Jennings, simply that his highlights & body type reminds me a little of him.

What does "very special" mean? Conference championship, win at least one game in the Big Dance, something else?
