roadrunners @ utep game thread

One last thought from last night. I commented how UTEP hadn’t had a large crowd in so long, they forgot how to handle it. Leaving the Sun Bowl, I was amazed by the amount of trash in the party area on the north end, and the parking lot next to the practice field across the street. It literally looked like a bomb exploded. I’ve never seen it that littered in all the years I’ve been attending games, both UTEP and Sun Bowl. A total disgrace. Once again UTEP drops the ball.

Sad to say, but the trash issue is an El Paso problem as a whole.

UTSA is legit. Harris makes very few mistakes. He is athletic and reads the defense well. He picked us apart. McCormick is a damn good back, too. The o line, great fundamentals and really strong. Moved us around. Receivers gave us fits with their athleticism and length.

Hard to determine how good they are defensively, as we are a poor measure for that, but they seem athletic and more than serviceable. I hope they run the table.

Even though they were behind us a few short years ago, that’s program that utep could borrow a page or two from.
Utsa may be undefeated and close to top 10 once it's all said and done. They're legit, however.... We didn't play well yet again against a good opponent. That's what I'm disappointed with. We always crap the bed. We did better with turnovers that was the only good thing. There were some things that would've made this game closer, but the result was never in doubt. Moving on I'll be at the N. Texas game up here next week and we have to stop the snow ball and get a win. If we are honest, we expected the last 2 weeks to be losses.

Do you think it has anything to do with Dimel's approach to good teams? Does he approach these games with a 'We are going to win this game' or a 'let's try to survive' attitude. My impression is the latter.

Agree. There is zero killer instinct evident in Dimel. Zero. Always seems to be playing to protect something. Always on his heels. That’s my perception.

Offense lacks creativity. Why is it every team in the country can run the hurry up offense, except us? Why do we huddle? Why do we line up, only to look over to the sidelines to get signals from the coaches? Why do we rush to snap the ball before the play clock reaches zero? Why do we run the wildcat offense? Why, when we do run the wildcat, WE DON’T THROW THE FAWKIN’ BALL?

We've thrown 76 passes in the last 2 games and completed less than 50%.

Here is the concern I have. How long has it taken Dimel to get us where we’re at? Now, look at how long it has taken Traylor to get UTSA where they’re at? What I saw last night was the poise and discipline they played with compared to the Miners. We are no where near that level. I agree with what others have posted, we were out coached last night. If Traylor can do it, we need to find that type of coach, if we want to win now.

How many players on the UTSA squad were recruited by Frank Wilson?

Looked at their 2-Deep on Ourlads. Out of their 22 Offensive and Defensive Starters + 7 Specialist.....There's 1 Sophomore and the rest are Juniors and Seniors. Remember that all these players were also Juniors and Seniors a year ago.

He inherited a pretty stacked team it appears.

Ugh we’re trying to be like them…undefeated, ranked, invite to new conference. I wish we were there but it’s going to take a lot of work.

Traylor did indeed inherit a talented group by way of Wilson. Just to name a few, McCormick, Harris, D. Taylor, and Wisdom were Wilson recruits. Wilson's recruiting classes were solid during his time there.

Wilson was known as good recruiter for LSU and Traylor is reaping the benefits of his solid recruiting. This is a Mike Price situation: Two bowl games first two years and both with Gary Nord recruits.

I'll say this again, UTEP should be better next year. So going 7-5/8-4 and a good showing in a Bowl would be a good step forward. However Hardison is not developing how you'd like to see. He's definitely not a Big Moment QB at this time. This teams potential as I see it, is held back by Dimel and Hardison!

If Traylor had taken over UTEP in 18 how long would it have taken him to get the program at the level UTSA is at?

Agree. And then to see Hardison with his hands up pissed at the receiver when he overthrew him by about 2 - 2/12 feet was laughable. I get it, if your receiver runs the wrong route that’s one thing, but Hardison seemed to blame his WRs several times when it was he that missed his target so blatantly. He may get marginally better over the next couple years, but we’ve seen about the best this kid is gonna give.

Don’t get me started on how Dimel limits this team.

I was befuddled at that. WTF

No doubt. The dude was the head of the Texas High School Coaches Association, he’s got connections. One interview I heard, Traylor says he gets about 200+ messages from HS coaches telling him congrats after every win. Recruiting would’ve been there, and as we saw yesterday he can coach.
But, what’s impressive to me is his loyalty. Staying at and creating a powerhouse at Gilmer HS is just the beginning. He constantly talks about and praises how Campos and UTSA gave him his shot.

He could've definitely went to a post 5 school after this year and chose to stay. UTSA will be a power in AAC. If they finish this year undefeated they'll be top 10

I’ll be at the N Texas game too. I was also at the UTSA game Saturday. Doesn’t matter how good we had played we would not have beaten them. Overmatched
