Time for UTEP to show progress in Golding's third season | Bloomquist

Joe Golding's third season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program is not an absolute make-or-break.

It is big.

His arrival in 2021 after leading Abilene Christian to NCAA tournament glory sent a charge of excitement into a Miner program that last made the NCAA tournament in 2010, which perhaps overlooked the fact Golding needed eight years to take ACU to the postseason.

The landscape of college basketball has changed, to the point teams can retool almost instantly through the transfer portal and where a Conference USA school like Florida Atlantic can make the Final Four a year after going 19-15.

That doesn't mean UTEP has to make the Final Four this year, or even the NCAA tournament. This is an important season to take a major step forward after the 14-18 disappointment of 2022-23 when UTEP's offense became nearly unwatchable.

This year the Miners need to show they've put themselves in the mix for bigger things, that if matters line up correctly they have the foundation in place to make a March run.

Golding agrees.

"I like where we are in year three," Golding said a week before Monday's opener against McMurry. "I’m excited to coach this team, I’ve loved coaching this team since the summer. I’ve had a lot of fun, good things are happening. But yes, I’m happy where we are in year 3.

"This team will compete, I like that about this team. We have to have some success early coming off of last year, that’s important to get our fan base back involved and getting belief back in our program. We’re going to have opportunities early."

We need to give Babe Laufenberg some love on this board. His son never got to play a down for the Miners but he’s been a bigger cheerleader and campaigner for the football program than many within the university. It’s great to see he’s fundraising for a scholarship and a nutrition station on campus.

With the Bye Week great chance for 2 biggest weapons to get healthy!

Good timing for Hardison and Tyrin Smith to heal up with their mystery injuries. This way they can help the team down the stretch. There is 1,000% NO DOUBT in my mind that these are real injuries. Yes, granted UTEP wont disclose the nature of the injury or if surgery is needed or doctor's timeline, and we know the media would not ask more probing questions. Putting that aside, these guys love playing for UTEP and in no way, no way, (One more time no way) they are trying to preserve a redshirt year and hit that portal.

So looking forward to this offense clicking these last 2 weeks, especially against the #3 toughest schedule among schools in the Mountain time zone with a losing record, and averaged less than 12,000 fans in their last home game ,while losing 3 straight at home.

MTSU game thread🏈

The last road game of the year and the flight was an 1 hour 30 minutes late to Nashville.
Game Time temperature: 55° - 61°F and 🌞.
Login to view embedded media MTSU opened as 7.5 point favorite (o48.5), still -7.5 (o47.5).

Where's Our Master Plans?

Does Senter have any plans to improve the Athletic Department? Or are we going to keep doing the same ole?

Seems like MTSU turned down the MAC because they have bigger aspirations. They know they might be next in line for the AAC. They've been quietly fundraising and are about 90% of the way to their first goal of 66 million to start this project.

Senter, what are you doing to get us ready for the next wave of realignment? Or is your goal to keep asking for donations with no clear plan in sight?

A&M Set to Fire Jimbo Fisher

Apparently some schools are continuously dedicated to finding a winner and conference championships.

Last UTEP coach to be fired (not resigned/retire) is Gary Nord after the 2003 season (20 years ago), he won 29.2% of his games in 4 years.
In that timespan, UTEP is 86-151 (36.3%), including this year, and UTEP never fired a coach.

Price won 41.4% = lasted 9 years and even was invited back after Kugler bolted, that guy sure could tell a good joke after losing a game! What a great guy!
Kugler 33.3% - horrible hire, Stull's lasting legacy (hiring a former player as a courtesy).

Dimel is 29.9% (20-47), yet there is actual concern among fans there is a chance he will be brought back. If you grant him his first 2 years trying to rebuild, he is only 41.9% winning % (18-25) = which is right on par with Price.
If history is indication of future results, then we should expect 3 1/2 more years of Dimel because he's a proven winner in the same mold as the Mike "Fake Arrest" Price.
At that time midway through the 2027 season he will step down for "personal reasons" and Scottie "Mix it up" O'Hara will be named interim, then permanent HC after the season, after going 2-5 as Interim.

I need to go back and compare coaches TIme of Possession, Most Timeouts used, most 3rd and over 20 yard plays, and removing helmets after a defensive stop - I am positive Dimel leads all-time coaches (need to verify of course)
