OT: Cincy District. 2nd shooting in 2 weeks

A great idea started years ago is now a nightmare for some. DWI deaths, public intoxication, urination near Kern homes, stabbings, fights, some belligerent owners who will not comply with guidelines, and now the 2nd shooting in 2 weeks in the Cincy District. "The Devil's Triangle" (Northeast) doesn't need the competition.

EPPD needs help with this area.

I suck at picking basketball coaches

It's a damn good thing that I'm not an AD. I have come to the conclusion that I really suck at picking basketball coaches.

I was at work when the Tim Floyd hire was announced. I screamed out loudin delight. My coworkers came rushing to my desk to see what was wrong. I thought that a new and glorious era of UTEP Basketball, similar to what we experienced in the 80s, was eminent. I couldn't have been more wrong.

After Floyd's failure, I was on board with Terry. I loved his history as a recruiter, thought that his Fresno State teams showed improvement, and appreciated the fact that he was able to lead them to an NCAA Tournament birth. For 1.5 seasons I thought that I had been correct, despite the struggles we knew he would experience his first year, then the wheels came off in Hawaii during his sophomore campaign. He did prove that he could recruit, but his coaching left much to be desired. He would have been fired as coach if he hadn't lucked into the opportunity that Chris Beard provided him.

I had two favorites during the search for our current coach: Tang and Golding. It looks like I was miraculously right about Tang. I liked him after watching Baylor's defense when they won the title. Gonzaga's offense was one of the best I had ever seen, yet they were completely flummoxed by Baylor's suffocating defense. I wanted that defense here at UTEP. But I also liked Golding. I loved how he had built his ACU team from nothing into a conference champion, two time NCAA Tournament team, and Tournament game winner, something we haven't done since '92. I was excited when he was hired and pumped after his introductory press conference. The season is still young, so he has ample opportunity to change my mind, but from where I stand now it looks like I was wrong again, just as I was with Floyd and Terry.

Good thing that I'm not an AD. You guys would be coming after me with pitchforks and torches. If I had a clone he'd join you.

Time for UTEP to show progress in Golding's third season | Bloomquist

Joe Golding's third season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program is not an absolute make-or-break.

It is big.

His arrival in 2021 after leading Abilene Christian to NCAA tournament glory sent a charge of excitement into a Miner program that last made the NCAA tournament in 2010, which perhaps overlooked the fact Golding needed eight years to take ACU to the postseason.

The landscape of college basketball has changed, to the point teams can retool almost instantly through the transfer portal and where a Conference USA school like Florida Atlantic can make the Final Four a year after going 19-15.

That doesn't mean UTEP has to make the Final Four this year, or even the NCAA tournament. This is an important season to take a major step forward after the 14-18 disappointment of 2022-23 when UTEP's offense became nearly unwatchable.

This year the Miners need to show they've put themselves in the mix for bigger things, that if matters line up correctly they have the foundation in place to make a March run.

Golding agrees.

"I like where we are in year three," Golding said a week before Monday's opener against McMurry. "I’m excited to coach this team, I’ve loved coaching this team since the summer. I’ve had a lot of fun, good things are happening. But yes, I’m happy where we are in year 3.

"This team will compete, I like that about this team. We have to have some success early coming off of last year, that’s important to get our fan base back involved and getting belief back in our program. We’re going to have opportunities early."
