Coach Terry makes 1st UTEP offer / Basketball Recruiting

Getting Tarke and Williams, even though they will need to sit out the year, puts us in a good spot 2 years from now. Williams is a sure fire plug and play all conference level player. Need a couple of interior guys for next year. A grad transfer or two would fit nicely. Getting Ezeagu is huge; great upside.

Did I miss something. Did you mean hoping to get Tarke and Williams?

Yes still hoping on both. Feeling pretty good about Williams :)

I am intrigued to see what this kid can develop into. As it stands right now he is listed as being 20 pounds heavier than both Paul Thomas and Rhyanes and he looks like he can add some more bulk. Him and Odigie are listed as being 230 and 240 so maybe we can finally have some big men who can throw their weight around.

"Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, George Mason, St. Bonaventure, Nevada, Kansas State, Wake Forest, Kansas, Georgetown, Texas, Auburn, Minnesota, George Washington, Texas Tech, Pittsburgh, UNCC, UConn, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, Florida Atlantic, La Salle and Dayton all expressed interest in Tarke when he received his release in March, but not every school has pushed for him since. He’s coming off an official visit to South Alabama -- where former Terps director of basketball operations Nima Omidvar is now an assistant -- and has plans to visit UTEP and South Florida as well"

That's why S. Alabama is in the mix?

Makes sense, think of the guy we took from Fresno when Terry came over to UTEP.

I hope he chooses UTEP. Can't help but think of the last time UTEP tried to get another player with Maryland roots by the name of Cliff Tucker. UTEP tried to get him as a duo threat (football and basketball) and he was from El Paso due to his family being stationed at Bliss. However, he did have family ties up in Maryland

Hopefully these days will be back. Ok? I said hopefully. I didn't say it was going to happen.

Ok so is this a done deal? Sorry at work... is it just a verbal or did he sign? If it's just a verbal we can still lose him

Am I wrong to believe that everyone will show and we'll have a drama free off-season...?

This must be what it feels like to get out of an abusive relationship....

I wonder if Kap feels the same? Lol. It was over the summer I think when he was ambushed by Floyd and made UTEP hoops look like tin foil hat conspiracy nuts.

BTW...Happy Birthday Kappy!

Next up is Ben Perez from South Plains JC.
Nice. He’s from San Marcos. Originally played for SDSU before transferring out to South Plains JC. That school is power house under Green. They won the NJCAA national championship this past season. His second there. Should be a good addition if he signs.

Man who cares how many guards or how many forwards. UTEP needs ballers. Did Golden State need Durant??? no they didn't you don't prevent a Baller to join your team. This Perez kid looks like a baller he is a great shooter. HE would open up the floor. UTEP needs a shooter like this.

and this is what I talk about in rebounding. Remember when I said boxing out was not all that important in rebounding. Look how Perez got some of those rebounds. YEs boxing out is important. But while your busy boxing out a player the ball goes somewhere else and ball hits the floor and some guard just swooshes by and gets it. Perez here shows how to go get rebounds with out boxing out.

I would agree. Give me a team with 4 shooters and 1 rebounder. As long as the 4 shooters are 45% shooters.

So what you are saying, Fili, is you are ok with not getting anymore guys to play the paint? Just go get more guards?
Look man, I like ALL the kids Terry is going after. My concern is rebounds, cuz we ALL know we won't be shooting 50% from 3s every night. We need to get a damn rebound. Also, when we play a team with a couple decent big men, how are we going to defend them?
We have roster room for plenty of guards, but we DO NEED inside players too, and I am just not seeing many more names out there yet....hence I was basically begging for one or 2.

I agree with the notion of stock the cupboard with ballers. Can never have too many shooters on a team...and this kid is a pure shooter. Almost everything that went down was all net. Definitely has a nice stroke. I do, however, think the emphasis has to be on bigs going forward. There has to be a balance, and we are slim pickins in the frontcourt.

As far as your rebounding theory...I still have to disagree. The only reason Perez came up with most of those rebounds, aside from good effort on his part, IS because NOBODY boxed him out. It’s like assignment fb...even though a kid doesn’t make the tackle, as long as he performed his assignment, he allowed for his teammate to make it by closing up a lane. Same with bb...a player isn’t going to come down with every board, but as long as he keeps his guy off the glass by boxing him out, he has done his job. Does it work every time? No. Is it still emphasized, even at the collegiate and NBA levels? Yup.

Terry likes his guards. He runs a guard heavy roster.

In 2017 9/16 in the roster are guards.
2016 12/18
2015 9/14
2014 8/13
2013 9/13
2012 8/13
Curious to see what CRT runs. He cut his teeth at UT, and like most in the Big XII and to this day, run a heavy tilt outside the paint with emphasis on the perimeter game. In all fairness to Floyd, he is kind of old school and preferred to attack inside first and when he had Jones, Thomas and Wilms he was happy with that. Floyd wanted big men first with a strong pg and the rest was support basically. His offense was really simple but very rigid and I mean that in a complimentary way. But it didn't win championships. You want to run an offense that gets it done not only in November, but March as well when it becomes "one and done season".

But Terry, like most major teams, is going opposite. As for me, I'm of the Floyd tilt to be perfectly honest because it's time tested and true. I really do think's Floyd's recruiting flying circus mad him whacko.
