Football Recruiting

This is the most that I have ever seen UTEP recruit the state of Arizona. It seems over the past month, that almost all of our high school offers have been to either San Antonio area kids or Arizona kids. I guess this makes some sense as Phoenix is the closest big city(NFL city) to El Paso.

I wonder if Sione will play defense or Fullback?

As per USA Today:
"
Jalan Early, Goodyear Millennium, QB/LB, 6-3, 215
Early's athleticism (he's also a pretty good basketball player on the state's top-ranked team) makes him intriguing, but Power 5 schools for some reason have not offered. He does have interest from Arizona and Utah. His offers are NAU, Dixie State, Idaho, Western Illinois, Yale and UTEP. He doesn't care what side of the ball he plays at the next level. He just wants to play. Very coachable. His dad is Millennium head football coach Lamar Early."

There is some major Arizona stud that is available according to USA Today but big programs are not touching him because he can't qualify, most D1 are not offering to be honest but he has smaller school offers. Do some magic Dimel. Price did it with Marcus Thomas (top Arizona rb at that time), you can too.

He looks big enough and physical enough, but I count 8 different plays where he wraps both arms around the defender and throws them to the ground. Why is he putting plays like this on his HUDL video, as if doing this is cool or something? Those are penalties and poor technique. You can even see the penalty flag being called on him at the 1:02 mark of the video. There is another play on his HUDL where he catches a backwards pass during practice and then jumps over a teammate as he goes into the end zone, except that he appears to intentionally stomp on his teammate while jumping over him.

Dimel has a lot of work to do regarding on-field discipline if he is going to earn our trust back and I don't see this guy being an asset towards achieving that goal. He also has a lack of FBS scholarship offers, so maybe there is a reason for that?
This past season is this kid’s first year playing organized football, great athletic ability, but is a project who is better off at a DII. Dimel doesn’t have the coaching staff to develop kids like him....

Out of our late commits, Ike looks like one of the more interesting prospects. He appears to have some physical tools that could possibly be developed into something, if we can get him some good coaching.

On a different note, it looks like the staff is scrambling trying to find another LB.

Alex having heartburn for UTSA extending a preferred walk on to a local kid. Guess Dimel has to land them all locally. Dimel gives back SA players and UTSA vice versa?

Here's the thing though, isaiah Davis is the highest rated prospect UTSA has and hes ranked much higher than anyone UTEP has signed. Davis was not getting nearly anywhere the attention as Willie Eldridge and isnt nearly the player. The fact is, after the top 200 players or so, 247 doesn't do a good job evaluating. They dont update CUSA often all.

I dont think there is much difference in the 10th-14th in CUSA. They're probably all getting poor recruiting classes and nobody is getting 'killed.'

Close to home, but far enough is my point.

Losing Davis might now be even more damaging after we lost Taylor earlier today to UNM. This is where Dimel Blue Shirting guys is hurting and also explains how we have lost a couple of signee's over the past couple of year's with no explanation after their signings(they are still technically unsigned until classes start). Taylor was committed to us at the time of the early signing period, but UTEP didn't have enough scholarships available to sign him, so they were going to wait and do it during the late period as a blue shirt. Had we had the schollies, then he would have signed in the early period, and he would be a Miner(along with some other guys that we are waiting to sign next week.)

BTW, the new UNM coaching staff has been offering a lot of guys that we are involved with, including our 2 Cy Falls guys that had decommitted. We have also now lost 2 potential WR's(Davis and Taylor) to brand new coaches(UTSA and UNM). If Dimel is going to plan on making Arizona a primary recruiting hot bed, it looks like he will need to be prepared to recruit against UNM's new coaching staff and their ties to Arizona.

Jace Taylor was an example of a guy that would probably be a low 2 star but will get bumped higher with the UNM offer. He's kind of a one trick pony with being the tall athlete that runs go routes. But nonetheless, a skill set this team didnt have. We do have Q Workman and Q Drennan and a dynamic playmaker in Cowing.

Just checked Jace Taylor or 247Sports. He had no other FBS offers and no stars when he was on our list. Now he has 3 stars and would be one of our better recruits. Coincidentally, they still have Gabe Stonewall as UNM's top commit. He doesn't have them on his twitter and is posting offers from Tarleton, Lamar, SFA, and Sam Houston.

Yep, kinda odd that Jace Taylor is committed to us for over a month, we are his only FBS offer and he is ranked as a zero star. But then on the exact same day that he flips to UNM, he gets bumped up to a 3 star.

Dimel said that we had 2 WR's committed in December. We just lost 1, so hopefully we still have the other one committed.

Stonewall's recruiting profile really dropped as the season went on and UTEP never really seemed that interested. Now he has only FCS offers. I'm not sure what to make of him?

I think everybody hopes that you are right. The good thing about Simmons is that he is a true defensive player, not just a good high school athlete that will be trying to convert into a college defender. Still not sure what position he will translate to, but like I said earlier, taking a chance on one or two local guys like this each year won't hurt.

A lot of recruiting news regarding guys that we have offered and/or have visited.......and none of it is good news:

- We just lost our second different target to UNM this week, as Tavian Combs committed to them today.

- Trey Johnson announced today that he has chosen UNLV.

- Taleni, a JC target, visited K State this weekend, so he is likely out of the picture as well.

Thus far, this has not been a good final recruiting week leading up to Signing Day.

Our next hire needs to be a splash hire who can bring in recruits quickly and win some games in CUSA. Then the next coach after that will need to be able to take that success and take it a step forward. We need some excitement on offense and somebody that can bring in some decent players. It's time to invest in in the program. We cant try to be on par with other programs we are not on par.

So let me get this straight. The top recruits for both UNM and UTSA are both from El Paso?

Jayden Goodwin committed to Air Force.

The EP Times says that we are expected to sign 12-14 players tomorrow. We signed mire defense in the first signing period and we should sign more offense in this second signing period. The offensive signings should including 3 TE's and 2 WR's. Not sure if Q Drennan is counting towards the 2 WR's, or if there are 2 new High School WR's.

Also, Felix Chavez tweeted that Simmons will be a preferred Walk-On.
