Dave Feitl

Last night my ex-boss and I were discussing past Sun Bowl tourneys. Somewhere in the conversation Dave Feitl‘s name came up. He spent almost the entire game trying to remember Feitl’s nickname, until he finally remembered “The Cheese”. However, he doesn’t know why or how Feitl came upon that nickname. Can anyone shed some light on this?

LaTech @ UTEP MBB Prediction, Game, etc Thread

I find it interesting that Big Ham got his first substantial minutes of the conference season at Middle before a busted lip put him on the sidelines for the rest of the game. He was one of the first off the bench. This is probably going to be a trend. Ham is a flippin' bulldozer under the rim and Jeremy Cox has him coached up and ready to go.
Comparing Big Ham to Soloman...
Hamilton: 9 minutes-4 rebounds-3 of 3 from the floor-1 steal-6 points-0 blocks.
Soloman: 19 minutes-2 rebounds-2 of 3 from the floor-4 steals-6 points-2 blocks.
Soloman led all players in the steal department with 4. Middle had 1 steal as a team.

Homer prediction:
Miners 92
Big Woof 88
Isaiah Crawford fouls out with 5 minutes to go.

Throwback UTEP Apparel at Homefield Apparel

Passing this along in case anyone is interested in UTEP gear with the old logos.

Plays that Define the Season

1) A foul on a dunk attempt by Elijah Jones just before half. Jones takes a foul and is "coached" for not being in position. Reality, 150 pound Baylor Hebb gets faked out by a 6-8 player on a simple head fake, instead of stopping the ball 15 feet out, he allows a clear path to the rim, where Jones has to try and protect. No repercussions for Hebb for actually being at fault here. Happens all the time. Just follow Hebb on Defense, he gets beat and another guy has to bail him out with a foul.

2) Tied 65-65, Solomon gets a steal, decides to dribble all the way down (As he is allowed to do all season), and throws a bad pass, Turnover (As he has done all season). They hit a 3. Next position, for who knows what reason, Solomon gets the ball low and attempts a half-hearted shot and gets blocked (As has happened all season), they hit a bucket, we're down 5 and the game is essentially over.

3) Hardy gets fouled for an and-1, misses (as usual), McHenry gets fouled, hits his FT, we give up a point in this sequence.

4) Dos Anjos hits a three every few games, but when he misses, its not even close, literally its a brick each time (No down and came out, or just missed, its feat or famine). He's made 8 threes all year out of 29, so out of the 21 misses, I would venture 15-17 of those had no chance of going in, none. He's a veteran and he still gets spooked when shooting, then why is he playing D1 ball?

Why don't coaches demand Solomon give the ball to a guard or he sits, why do they allow this all season. When Solomon has the ball, there is a good chance he will turn it over (After 25 games, its apparent), so why is this even allowed. Its like Walden feeding a RB who fumbles twice each game (he just sits until he can figure his S**t out)

Hebb playing in meaningful minutes, someone explain that to me. Yes, protect fouls on other guys, but Hebb cost you points and a foul on a guy who is contributing so its a minus when he's on the floor. If he actually could hit a shot, that's one thing, but he does nothing offensively.

Fools Golding Year 4 Prep

Let's be real. Fools Golding will be here next season. He is going to give the freshmen and Big Ham more minutes and get cover for Senter to keep him at least one more year. He will say that the freshmen and Ham showed improvement and that Barbeque will be eligible and things will finally be better in year 4.

I'm prepping for next year the way I prep for every year. I bring zero expectations that UTEP will be any good. Zero. I'm not from Missouri but I'll believe it when I see it. Hopefully before I meet my maker Mother Earth.

Big Things Coming

UTEP has a big plan to show a new big project in the summer. The most expensive project to happen yet. I only know a part of it because what I know doesn't cover the whole cost for sure because if it does then they overspent. I like the idea so far and I'm not sure if all of you guys would like this but I think it's the step in the right direction. I can't share too much unfortunately.

Dorktown

Seeing the tweets and old pics of Andy Reid at UTEP got me thinking maybe the guys at Secret Base could do a Dorktown doc on the history of UTEP football. I mean our history is just about wacky enough, but probably wouldn’t draw any interest except for UTEP fans.

I listen to them while working and if ya don’t know who I’m talkin bout, check them out on YouTube. Recommend their docs on the Vikings and Mariners—great stuff.

2003-04 Team "Recognition"

I happened to get tickets to the game last Saturday, it felt like the task of recognizing the team fell on 3 college interns who were upset they got extra work

1) Nothing against the Tiguas and they do a lot for UTEP, but why have a ritual dance for 4-5 minutes on the same night? Halftime is only 15 minutes, so you are down to 10, and with warmups, maybe down to 6-7 minutes, thats what you devote to recognize this team?

2) No fanfare for the intros, they rushed through it and just announced their names. Fili, OT, Jason Williams, Smallwood are legendary players, yet they got the same intro as 4-5 student managers.
Why not say "Roy Smallwood, averaged 12.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and his key rebound against Central Florida sealed a 15 point comeback" (Im making that up but you get the point)
Fili Rivera, "the heart of the team, lead UTEP to 61 wins in 2 years... (Nope just Fili Rivera, same as some manager I don't even remember)

3) They then show a clip of OT with no sound, and everyone is confused, then they unfurl the banner with his jersey, again very lackadiasical and rushed, getting your jersey retired is in itself a halftime event and a major accomplishment, yet UTEP feels they can squeeze that in because we have to do a Peter Piper promo.

On the subject of in-game entertainment, UTEP is downright boring, the woman who emcee's the events that wears the denim jacket (and does football) yelling does nothing special and having her do a promo every single timeout, really we cant let fans enjoy the game itself or listen to a band without some goofy money grab?

1) "ok Miner fans its SUPER EASY, all Jose has to do is run 50 yards, do 15 burpees, and kick a 65 yard field goal in less than 14 seconds and he wins a brand new Kia" - yeah SUPER EASY, that even Gavin Baechle would be "no way".
2) I happened to be in Section V and "won" a free Cane's for being the loudest section, yet the cheerleaders give out like 7 coupons and leave - ok
3) Why do they have a weather report pre-game, they do know the game is indoors? Hey Miner fans, check out the weather "At halftime it will be a chilly 42 degrees", ok thanks as I sit in 68 degree climate controlled gym
4) Why not have a score ticker or show some scores, "Hey Miner fans, check out the Alameda Temp Agency scoreboard" and show Top 25/C-USA updates - I bet fans like that more. Yes we have score apps on our phones (ESPN/The Score/Yahoo), but pretty sure we all have at least 1 weather app as well.

And as Ray Sanchez would say, on the subject of ESPN+ Crews:

1) Medina - we know the guys in white play for UTEP. You don't have to say, "And Tae Hardy hits a 3 for the Minerrrrrs", "Otis Frazier with the basket for the Minersssss", remember we are watching the same game, were not 4 years old, we can follow the action, just give updates, like his 3rd foul or up to 11 points, etc and tell us who hit the basket. But then again, I always wonder, who is this Tae Hardy they keep talking about, does he play for us, scratch that nevermind, that actually helps because I forget he plays for us so keep doing what you are doing.

UTEP is a BIG step for Joe Golding

If ACU doesnt beat Texas does he get the UTEP job?? He got 1 big win and got the UTEP job.

ACU hasnt had any other big wins since beating Texas. If that big man doesnt make those free throws for ACU Joe Golding isnt the head coach at UTEP.

but now that he is.

Where is he going to recruit?? Where does he get his players?? He now has to recruit high end players not players that play at the Southland Conference.

no matter what you guys think of Floyd and Terry but they recruited high major players.

It will be interesting how Joe does it..

The Andy Reid Story: A Life of Family, Football and Friendships

This article is from the Kansas City Chiefs website. There is a section in the story which addresses Andy Reid's time at UTEP.

The biggest take away for me which I didn't realize was the following:

"In two years at UTEP, team went a combined 17-7 and picked up their first 10-win season in 1988, a year that ended with an Independence Bowl loss to Southern Miss and their young playmaking quarterback—Brett Favre. But soon, the Reid family was on the move again after Stull accepted the head coaching position at the University of Missouri.

The family had grown by one more while they were in El Paso as their first daughter, Crosby, was born.

Koetter was actually offered the head coaching position at UTEP after Stull had accepted the job at Mizzou and wanted Reid to stay with him in Texas, but Koetter ultimately declined the job and they both ended up heading to Columbia with Stull."
